I just received a prescription for my son through a $0 co-pay program from the drug company.

I have a high deductible plan and our cost would have been 100%, so this saved us A LOT of money.

It has me wondering, what is the catch? Who is taking the hit?

Drug companies don't have a history of giving away their products at no cost.

Any other details on this?

You have to have commercial insurance to qualify. I had to fill out a form, the dr office filled out the prescription info, sent it to the administrator, and then I was contacted to schedule delivery.

Some drug companies "subsidize" heavily for new products for 12 months to get new patients test the product and if it works then even when the subsidy goes away in a year, the patient will continue to pay for it at whatever full cost is, or whatever the co-pay is.

One of the drugs which my Allergist wanted me to use was Dymista nasal spray. Most insurance companies did not even cover this and full price was something like $140 per bottle and my Allergist gave me a manufacturer's coupon which was good for 12 monthly refills for $5. I tried for 2 months and it was not any more effective than Flonase or Nasacort and I stopped.

Drug companies will subsidize a lot of maintenance drugs for a while. King of like the street dealer that gives the first hit free. And like @mentalbreak said you usually get insurance to pay their part and then they kick in. I made out one year when I did this as the co-pay was applied to my deductible.

They usually won’t cover if you are on Medicare, even though my prescription coverage was through my employer

We got a script for a med that my insurance did not cover. The price at my CVS was $600. I went on the goodrx website and there was a coupon for the same drug at Stop N Shop for $52. I thought there was a catch but when I went to Stop n Shop, sure enough they took the coupon and saved us $548.

I use GoodRx also and can't figure out who's paying. There's no membership, you just print a coupon. DW's Rx is $62 that way; with our Part D (still in deductible phase) it'd be $260.
