Hello TUGgers,

Has anyone done a small ship cruise? I am not interested in ships with hundreds of passengers or sailing ships.

Any information would be appreciated.

Thank you

Kathleen

Kathleen, first you have to figure out where you arge going?? You sound like a perfect candidate for river cruising, ships are small, 100 passengers plus, check out Viking Cruises, there are USA river cruises as well. There are smaller boutique ocean cruises as well, Crsytal Cruises etc. Google river cruises and small cruise ships or consult a travel agent that specializes in cruises, Good Luck!!!

We have taken a European river cruise on AMAWaterways www.amawaterway.com/ and a Windstar cruise in the Mediterranian Some of their ships have sails, though I wouldn't call them 'sailing ships' Since you specifically mention Croatia, here's one of their cruises that covers that area. https://www.windstarcruises.com/cru...ation-quintessential-croatia/?id=204&sid=3427

We have done the Tauck Venice, Dalmation coast tour. The boat is part of the Ponant line and holds about 230 passengers. Not tiny, but small enough to get to some places that bigger ships cannot. (For example, for Dubrovnik you take a small landing boat right to the edge of the city and walk in. You can return to the boat on your own schedule. The large cruise ships land over a mountain and passengers are bused in.)

The negative is that these tours are very expensive, but then again very luxurious. (Meals on the Ponant boat are like eating at a French restaurant.)

Thank you all. I am in the middle of my research for this trip. I am interested in the coast and islands. The river cruise ships are wonderful but they do not go where I need to be. Jim, I will check out that line. I had seen it before when I looked at Greek Isles. I do know from reading articles that some ships are "clothing optional". I will read the fine print very carefully to avoid that choice. Thank you Roger, I will look into Ponant, also.

You won't find anything like that . If anything- though 'Country Club Casual' is the ordinary dress code, it might be dressier than some care for. A jacket at dinner wouldn't be overdressed on Windstar.

Our travel section recently ran a story about 2 local families (totaling 16 people including an 80 year old grandma) who rented a private yacht (with crew) to cruise along Croatia. She didn't reveal what the cost was but it was fun to read about their experience. It almost made me overlook the fact that I get so motion sick that a trip like this shouldn't be on my bucket list!

Hopefully you access the article:

You might be best to contact a travel agent that specializes in these types of cruises. They would probably save you a ton of research time and their services usually don't cost you any more than if you book it on your own.

I think the boards at cruisecritic.com are great for this kind of research. Have you checked them out?

You may want to check out the Katarina line. Small intimate ships with great itineraries in Croatia.

My family cruised the Dalmatian coast with Katarina 2 summers ago, and loved it. Passengers were from 7 different countries- S Africa, New Zealand, Australia, Switzerland, Canada, UK, and USA. So fun and relaxing! Amazing food on board as well. Completely accommodating of my son's gluten allergy. My trip was arranged by Jen at TrulyCroatia Tours, and she was fabulous.

I was looking at the Katarina website yesterday. It's a little confusing so it's good to know that there is a good travel agent for this type of travel. Which itinerary did you choose to do?

Thank you Calgal and Glynda, I am working with fellow TUGgers Sandy who knows cruises inside and out. I am doing my research to narrow down what to include or leave out of my request for her. Unforgettable Croatia has lots of choices. So many that it is hard to compare. I am looking to do Dubrovnik to Split. Take the Ferry back to Dubrovnik and then Fly out from there. Kathleen

Hi Kathleen,

Would you consider a crewed sailing Catamaran? The below charter company has 7 day sailings departing in Croatia from cities including Split and Dubrovnik. I am not familiar with the company but they do seem to offer a lot of choices and visit different cities.

Good suggestion RNCollins. I have done whale watches and day long sightseeing catamaran cruises. But, I don't think that would fair well for a week.
Thank you. Kathleen
