WSAV-TV and The Island Packet are reporting tonight at 6:30PM, Governor McMaster has ordered a mandatory evacuation for Beaufort County (includes all of Hilton Head Island) at noon on Monday.
FYI, a mandatory evacuation involves:
- evacuations from medical facilities which are happening now.
- lane reversals on Rte. 278 East with no traffic allowed eastbound - once you leave, you won't be permitted to return until the order is lifted. This applies to residents and tourists alike, excepting only designated emergency personnel.
- mandatory closure of all hotel/timeshare lodging. It doesn't matter if you want to try to ride it out, they will not be able to check you in, and if you're already there you'll be forced to leave. Remember, the staff at the hotels/resorts are locals and they'd like to be with their families taking care of their own homes.
- Govt offices/schools/etc closed Tuesday, at least.
This is a slow-moving storm and the track will determine whether these orders are lifted sooner or later. Having suffered extensive damage from Hurricane Matthew they appear to be making the call sooner but, better safe than sorry. If you're scheduled to be on the island check your resort/company websites for any notices from them, and monitor WSAV.com or The Island Packet for latest info.
