We just finished up 2 days in the park. I’m still shaking. The roads (including all 64 miles worth I drive today) consist of white knuckle sharply curving drop offs with nothing but a thin white line differing the road and death. It was horrible. And the irony? Nearly at the end, when it finally got a little flatter, I sped up a bit and missed a 25mph sign so I was pulled over for speeding. Me, who spent the last 2 days going 30 in the 35 zone and pulling over constantly so annoyed people in Subarus could pass me.

My Dh wants to do the Grand Teton park after Yellowstone. Anyone driven there? Do I need to fly home instead?

Hi Beachclubmum,

Grand Teton is a breeze- no white knuckle driving.
Yes. do Grand Teton after Yellowstone. Both are spectacular.

Thanks Richard. I joked (through clenched teeth) to my DH today that the lack of guardrails is Yosemite’s way of keeping the tourist population in check.

BTW, La Quinta stays on the way out worked well for dd and her 4 legged friends. Thanks again!

Let's look at this from a different perspective: In your regular driving at home, how many times do you misjudge a curve in the road and drive off of the road? I'm guessing that you are going to say that you are a careful driver, and that never happens. So why would it happen in Yosemite or anywhere else? (Especially going 30 mph.) If you just aren't comfortable driving in the mountains, then you probably shouldn't drive in the mountains.

I'd drive 10-15 mph around mountain curves in Colorado
... leaning my body into the mountain-side of the road.
Meanwhile, locals would zip around 'em at 30-40 mph.

In Yellowstone, driving near Mt. Washburn & Dunraven Rass
... when it's freezing rain on you, can be a slog.
The Grand Tetons are a piece of cake.

I can't think of any steep side-hill roads in Grand Teton. The possible exception might be Teton Pass between Idaho Falls and Jackson, and it isn't bad. (It's US Highway). Stay away- FAR away from Going-To-The-Sun highway in Glacier park (Montana). You would likely wet your pants. :) Actually VERY beautiful, but if side-hills bother you this would.

I was just going to add Going to the Sun Road in Glacier National Park when I came upon your post! Gorgeous but definitely a white knuckle drive. A few days later, we drove the Beartooth Highway.

We live in Colorado and drive the roads up to the peaks. I cannot imagine being that afraid of driving in the mountains, living in Colorado has definitely kept me from being too worried about driving elsewhere.
