Ok, I see now why I haven't looked into Princess or Celebrity cruises.... they would require a FLIGHT from where we live in Texas. We choose to leave out of Galveston, still a 5 hour drive for us, but not a $500 flight to some other cruise port.
We took a Princess cruise out of Texas, at the time it was Houston. However they closed that port not long after our cruise. I thought Princess still left out of Galveston, but I could be wrong.

Just checked:

What cruise lines leave Galveston?
Cruise Ship
  • Carnival Cruise Lines (3) Carnival Dream. Carnival Freedom. Carnival Vista.
  • Disney Cruise Line (1) Disney Wonder.
  • Royal Caribbean International (3) Adventure of the Seas. Enchantment of the Seas. Liberty of the Seas.

I sort of lump Carnival Cruise line as floating Westgate. Not something I want to associate with. OK for some, but not me.

To the OP, don't let the perceived moral superiority of some of the posts here about Carnival dissuade you from your cruise. Go, have fun and I hope you win lots of cash in the casino.

Thank you! We have had such good cruise experiences (so far), that we will just keep cruising and timesharing until we have a poor experience....then alter our choices if we have a bad experience. We LOVED our Carnival cruise last year, so we selected them again for this next birthday. Thanks for the good wishes!!

I have heard of situations where people have been offered free return cruises based on time in the casino. Perhaps you will get lucky with one of those one day.

Oh!! That sounds great!! We’ve already seen some last minute offerings, one of which was only $75! But the dear hubby is not yet retired, so once that happens, we’ll be able to take advantage of those too!!! I’d love to win one though!! How exciting!!

I guess if we ever do, we will "ban" that cruise-line from our selection list
It's amazing to me how someone can have a bad cruise and the person in the cabin next to them can have the best cruise ever. I would never ban a cruise line based on one "bad" cruise. It seems like those who cruise often are more likely to complain about their cruise. I think it's because they have so many cruise memories to compare it to. My first cruise was great. There were lots of repeat cruisers on that cruise who were complaining the whole time.

One fun activity we have participated in on previous cruises is that people sign up for a 'slot pull' in a cruise critic roll call. Each person puts a set amount in the 'kitty', say $20. And if there are say, 50 people in the group, they all meet at a pre-arranged time in the ship's casino and take turns pulling max bets through one slot machine. In the above example, it is $1,000. The proceeds are then divided among all the players after everyone has played. We have never come out ahead, but have met some fun fellow cruisers and it's a good ice breaker.
