Brings back memories of one of my geography classes at UCLA on the origins of crop plants (I double majored in Geography and Anthropology). That class mainly stands out in my mind because of the open book (written by the professor) final we were warned about multiple times. Warning was not to expect to pass the final without having studied for it, no matter that the test was open book. Of course I ignored the warning, having plenty of other exams to study for. I was never so happy to see a C- in my life! I was convinced I'd failed. Still managed to graduate with honors because of the high grades in my classes I actually studied for.

You made me think of the first two times I actually saw someone use geometry, and my comments both times were why didn't they use real world examples for kids learning it in school. First time we had guys Cliff picked up in front of Home Depot doing concrete steps up our back hill to a flat area where we had a bench. The head honcho was trying to figure out the angle and number of steps "the hard way" and Cliff stepped in with a geometric diagram, which not only did the man understand, I'm pretty sure he was able to do the math again on someone else's job. Second time I watched our Greek contractor use stakes and string and paper and pencil to figure out the angle he needed as he was doing work in our driveway. I was quite impressed with the real world applications.
