I received a msg informing me a certain security program (aps) was not active.
It directed me to log into my MS account which requires my email-address and a password.
I enter my email-address and my password.
Received a msg that the password is incorrect.
So I re-entered my email-address and clicked on "Forgot Password".
It emailed a Reset code that I entered to 'change my password'.

I entered the password I've always been using...
and it responded that I can NOT use the same old password
(The exact same one that MS complained is 'incorrect' !!!

So I made-up another one and entered it twice to verify it's identical.
Then.. it asked to log-into my MS account (using the new password)
And... back to: "Received a msg that the password is incorrect.". :crash:

HELP ? :bawl:

Are you sure this email you received was from Microsoft and not a phishing attempt to get you to enter your username and password in to a bogus website that looked like your Microsoft login page? Did you go directly to the Microsoft website by typing it in to the address bar of your Browser or did you click through a link in the email you got?

Nothing to be ashamed of here, phishing attempts can be very deceiving. It is still possible that your email wasn't a phishing attempt. You can also check the address that a link in an email actually goes to by hovering over it and the address it will click through to will either popup or show up in the bottom status bar of the email window (it will depend on the operating system). I suspect your issue is with Office 365 or is it a Hotmail account issue? I would suggest going directly to the website by typing it in to the address bar or going through your bookmarks. Then attempt to login again using your original password. If it works, change it in your account settings. If that doesn't work, then try the forgot password link again.

Hi dioxide45

UPDATE:
I'm 99.99% sure it was a warning from M.S.
This is the entire msg in a "box":

Virus and Threat Protection
Turn on Virus Protection
Virus Protection is Turned Off
Tap or click to turn on Windows Defender AntiVirus
I snooped around and found this site:
https://forums.tomsguide.com/thread...rotection-keeps-turning-off-by-itself.442908/

Long story... short:
It's happened to others and common causes are:
  • It can occur after recent "Windows Update".
  • Sometimes an installed AV will continue to disable Microsoft's THREAT PROTECTION.
    • A person has Norton AV and it appears to be his culprit.
    • (I don't have Norton AV installed)
I haven't added, nor disabled, any of my AV's.

*************************

That stated... it still doesn't explain my inability to enter into my MS Account:

I enter my email-address and my password.
Received a msg that the password is incorrect.
So I re-entered my email-address and clicked on "Forgot Password".
It emailed a Reset code that I entered to 'change my password'.

I entered the password I've always been using...
and it responded that I can NOT use the same old password
(The exact same one that MS complained is 'incorrect' !!!

So I made-up another one and entered it twice to verify it's identical.
Then.. it asked to log-into my MS account (using the new password)
And... back to: "Received a msg that the password is incorrect.". :crash:

Something similar:
We typically access Netflix thru our cable provider.
On one of our TV's, tonight we were prompted to manually log into Netflix.
We hadn't done that since we originally set up the account a few years ago.
On all our other devices (TV's, computers, etc), log on was still automatic.
