That could have been much worse. Many years ago there was an actor, can't remember his name, who was killed by a prop gun that fired blanks.

Tight security there when you can bring your own cannon to a football game.

You can always count on a site like Deadspin, "Sports News Without Access, Favor, Or Discretion" for sensational 'news'.

That could have been much worse. Many years ago there was an actor, can't remember his name, who was killed by a prop gun that fired blanks.

Jon-Erik Hexum. He was goofing around between scenes during filming a TV series. He put the prop gun to his temple and pulled the trigger, not understanding that even though it had no bullets, a gun that shoots blanks still has a discharge. He died sometime later. An unplanned Darwin Award winner.

Now I'm just spitballing here, Dave but aren't all Darwin award winners of the unplanned variety?

There has been some side splitting stories from the Darwin files over the years but my favorite is still the guy who tied Army surplus weather balloons to a lawn chair (and secured by a jeep) and set flight with a pellet gun (IIRC).

True enough. One of those “Here, hold my beer” moments.

But if I remember correctly one of those balloon guys lived, the "Darwin award" is for those who don't make it

And IIRC, the name of the TV series was The Making of a Male Model.

Not sure. Google says the series being filmed was "Cover Up," where Hexum played a cop masquerading as a male model. So maybe that was the name of the episode?

I think the actor may have been "Pete Duel" from the television program "Alias Smith and Jones". It happened back in 1971.

Now that you mention it, I believe you are correct. The Making of a Male Model might have been a movie the now late actor starred in. I remember something have to do with that actor connected to The Making of a Male Model.

Pete Duel committed suicide. They recast the part to try to save the series.

Correct, but he was arrested and fined $1500. He was an "At-Risk Survivor" in the Darwin Awards.
