I didn't know that symbol was white supreme. I am white and in a massage school where white people make up about 25% of the students. When I am being worked on and the student working on me asks if the pressure is okay, I often use that sign. Nobody has said anything to me about it and I had no idea. I am going to bring it up when we have open discussion in my next class. I could have offended lots of people who I care about...

The ok finger jesture is still fine, imo. It all started as a hoax and seems to have blown up.

In 2017, the “okay” hand gesture acquired a new and different significance thanks to a hoax by members of the website 4chan to falsely promote the gesture as a hate symbol, claiming that the gesture represented the letters “wp,” for “white power.” The “okay” gesture hoax was merely the latest in a series of similar 4chan hoaxes using various innocuous symbols; in each case, the hoaxers hoped that the media and liberals would overreact by condemning a common image as white supremacist.

"Okay", it's all a hoax, nothing to be worried about

the liberal media has just overreacted to white supremacists (again)

I hope you’re not trying to justify this crap by saying it’s just a joke to “own the libs”. That doesn’t make it okay.

That's not what easyrider said at all. He merely quoted the Anti-Defamation League article.

I don't believe the WP hand symbol when actively and deliberately displayed is a hoax, intended to 'own' anyone. Any more than an upthrust fist by a person of African descent is meant to 'own' White society. It is simply a statement by the person using as visual speech. I don't agree with it, and do not confuse it with an innocent 'OK' flashed to signify agreement or approval.

I can tell the difference when hand signs are deliberately wrong and I think most people I know can too. Just in case here is a list. Most actually look like gang signs but some like the "ok" gesture is not easy to spot. Today while I was backing up, the guy directing my truck gave me the "ok" when I was far enough back. I am certain he did not mean white power. I didn't even know this was a thing until I read it here recently.

Yes, it is ok to do the ok gesture, imo. If you somehow feel uncomfortable doing the ok gesture just don't do it and that is ok too. I understand that some people have a low tolerance for racist shenanigans and this wp for ok is a real turn off to almost every one, me included. Even so, I'm ok with the normal ok gesture.
