My Son returned home from Orlando last night and used Uber to get home. He said all he had to do was list his Pickup Point by Terminal and Gate Number. He said he was quickly picked up without a problem...

It took forever for our Uber driver to find us at LAX. But we had a good idea of why based on our experience of taking Uber from my SIL's house to the airport. It takes the drivers forever to get through the airport loop. We took Uber from Redondo to LAX. It took us almost as long to drive through the loop at LAX as it took to drive from Redondo to the airport. About 20 min each part, iirc. More painful because our Uber driver was a talker whose hobby was extraterrestrials in the American southwest (I kid you not). After listening to him talk for 40 minutes about his odd experiences with ufos on his trips to New Mexico, we were more than ready to get out of the car!

We try to go in and out of San Diego obviously, but sometimes LAX is worth it. We are thinking of renting a car here and dropping it off at LAX and taking the airport shuttle in/out. I think that it will be cheaper than parking our car up there for two weeks.

Check for Park and Fly hotels near LAX. My parents used to do this. They'd drive up from Orange County, stay overnight, and leave their car at the hotel.

Last time I checked it was about $160ish to do that. The one time that we unexpectedly had to fly into LAX, it only cost us about $40 for a one way rental. I'll price it both ways for sure.

Check. Add one more to the many reasons to avoid LAX.

I guess I'm used to the place we stay when we fly in and out of ABQ. The hotel is usually around $70.00 for one night and you used to get a week free parking and $1.00 per day if you needed to leave it longer.

Maybe it's because I am looking for two weeks? I was surprised at the cost too.

Agree that this will make LAX more of a PITA than before. Unfortunately, there are many instances where you just can't avoid LAX if you're a S Cal resident.

Fortunately for me, I'm not so encumbered. For those who are, it's one of the prices you pay.

Heard this on the local news last night. Radio this morning said Taxi service would also be at the remote lot accessed by shuttle bus.

If it makes the airport loop road traffic more reasonable I'm all for this. The last time we flew out of LAX, we spent 40 minutes on the bus from the rental car drop off to the terminal. Terrible. I preferentially fly out of PSP, SNA or SAN when I got to S. Cal, but sometimes LAX is much cheaper (or direct and cheaper!)

This is what we do when we have to go in/out of Boston. It typically costs around $70 one way which is always cheaper than leaving the car anywhere for an extended trip or hiring a car service.

This has more to do with the construction project than singling out rideshares, taxis are also included in the move to the new pickup lot near terminal 1.

This will be going on for several more years, LAX the experience we love to hate.

I had a wonderful Lyft experience last week at LAX after returning from Spain. Ordered the ride and the driver was already there! He had just dropped someone off and instead of driving around waited for us to find him, saving everyone time.

If you haven’t visited LAX recently, the roads are seriously congested. Taking a shuttle to an off airport location to get Lyft or Uber isn’t asking too much in my opinion and may actually save time. More often than not (last week was a true exception for me) I end up waiting 20-30 minutes for my driver to pull up. If I take ~15 minutes to get to the off airport location and the driver is already there (or it’s much faster for them to get to and leave) it is not inconceivable that it will ultimately save time. It will be interesting to see how it actually works out.

I wonder if this was already happening de facto. I remember seeing the hotel shuttle buses at LAX with prominent "No Uber/Lyft" signs.

No. Some people use local hotel shuttles to get to the hotel and then call an Uber at that hotel. This is a completely different problem.

Same thing with Universal Studios in Orlando. If you use LYFT or UBER, you must go to the top of the parking garage. It used to be a major cluster trying to pick up and drop off in the bus area, and as a Lyft driver, I heard A TON of complaints about the bus area. I'm not sure about taxis. I would rather have a large area to pick up/drop off than a cramped driveway.
