Interesting, I worked 17 years as a traffic signal tech and our timing for yellow was based on the speed limit of the intersection, varying from 3.5 to 5.0 seconds. Most yellow light runners are speeding anyway and dont have a problem beating the red, its when they make the decision to run it too late after the yellow. We also had 1 second of all red before the next green.

I always count to 5 before going on green if I’m the first one in line.

Yes, we have delayed, all-way-red traffic signals here as well. I do always look before moving away if I am at the front of the line when the signal turns green. Not sure about counting to 5 though?? Unless you count really quickly, you will end up with lots of horns blaring behind you if you try doing that in Toronto...especially in rush hour :D !!

A longer yellow would be okay, but it would shorten green-time or delay crossing traffic.
IMHO, enuff allowance is made for folks trying to beat the light as it is. Harrumph.

I beat a red light ticket in court many years ago when I asked the officer how signals were timed. He didn’t know.

The judge offered to have a crew time the light in question and hang the outcome of the case on that. I said go ahead. I don’t know if they ever did it but the ticket got dismissed.

Do that in some places and you would be taking your physical well-being into your own hands.

Yeah, where I live Facebook is full of complaints about this. Of course, we tend to toot at drivers who don't start fairly promptly, as we're pretty sure they're looking down at their phone ...

Seriously? Threatening physical violence over 5 seconds of your life?

I’ve been subpeoned into court on several cases. One in particular the defense lawyer was sorry he asked for the maintenance records of the signal. The signal was checked a week before, then I proved there was no way his client could have triggered the green from a cross street in the time allowed at 3am. He tried to have my testimony stricken but the judge accepted me as an expert witness.

Dave, first of all, I'm not threatening anyone. Matter of fact, I think it's a good idea.

There are motorist out there who don't share our patience or concern and anger can be brought on for less.

When my son lived in SLC he regularly ran red lights to make a right turn. Apparently there was quite a delay between one direction turning red and the other direction turning green. From my observation many drivers in SLC drive the same way.

That's not a bad idea or habit. The problem I find in this neck of the woods (and I'm sure others in other areas will agree with me) is that if you wait longer than two seconds, people behind you angrily honk their horns.

That's because, more often than not, a person who just sits there after the light turns green is looking down at their phone and a honk is the only way to get them to pay attention. I witness it daily.
