It's been almost 20 years since I've had a puppy in my world and 9 years since I lost my last fur baby.

Sophie became the new love of my life just 3 days ago. Born Aug 27... currently 9 weeks old and 2.2 pounds. She's a beautiful mix of Dachshund/Chihuahua from her mom and Maltese/Yorkie from her dad.

I didn't think I'd ever do it again because - since the kids grew up - I've enjoyed my 'get up and go' lifestyle. As adorable as she is, the last 3 mornings (630am, 545am and 7am) I've asked myself "What have I done?!" Sleeping in is now a thing of the past... but I'm in love so it's okay.

Just wanted to share.

She’s beautiful!

We lost our Calypso (a papillon) on August 3rd. She was 14 and had numerous health problems. We also think we want to enjoy a few years of freedom to get up and go whenever we want without having to worry about a pet. But, they sure do add a lot to our family when we’re home, which is most of the time. I almost cried today when I came home, started up the stairs and I realized she wasn’t there greeting me. Oh well, time heals all wounds.

Give Sophie a big hug for me! She looks like a sweetheart!

Looks like a sweetie. Train her to sleep in. Dogs just want to please. I only lasted about a year after Mr. Bear's predecessor left us. I would go outside whenever someone's dog walked them in front of the house. I always carry treats in my pocket for new friends. Sophie will complete your life. (also leave 'gifts', but that's something else)

Crate train her. Comfy bed, safe and secure, covered to keep light to a minimum. Put her to bed at the same time each night, and get her up at the same time each morning. On YOUR schedule. She'll adapt. Feed and water her at the same times every day. Give treats at the same time every day. Stuff like that. It's all about consistent treatment.

Dogs are creatures of habit, so get her on a routine, and make her habits the ones YOU want, or she'll train you to follow HER habits.

OMG, what a cutie! What she needs is a brother or sister! When we brought our beagle Zeke home he cried when put to bed in the kitchen by himself and it broke my heart. Three days later the Cairn terrier breeder called us with half price on puppies so we brought Megan home. Blessed silence! Of course they'd smeared puppy poop all over the kitchen floor by the next morning, but they were quiet all night. When they got old Megan couldn't see well so Zeke would find her squeaky toy for her when she lost it. And when Zeke went deaf as he aged, Megan would go get him when he couldn't hear us. You definitely need a pair!

Whew! I believe you absolutely! The last time we had a puppy, it was from mating my toy poodle with my mom's toy poodle. It was a one-puppy litter and my daughter (7 at the time) insisted on keeping her. Her mom kept her in check and trained her much easier than I could have. It was almost effortless.

Puppies are a lot of work, but this time will pass and you'll have a great friend for a very long time.

Congrats on Sophie! She’s so cute! Puppies are the best little time suckers ever! You will get no sleep and nothing else done for a while but soooo worth it. Ours is 2.5 now and she sleeps in when we do and sleeps most of the day! There is hope!
