Trying to figure out the best way to do a hybrid trade/rental with a DVC owner, using my HGVC timeshare. We are wanting to book on DVC property and know that there are several “rental sites” we can go to to rent points from an owner. However, we are planning a couple trips next year (one being a Disney trip), and that means we will have a large chunk of points that we will not use.

Our idea is to “rent” points at a discounted rate AND trade for a stay in our timeshare. We still want to rent in order to help cover the maintenance costs, which is why several of us rent in the first place. The trade is to make it even more attractive. This is kind of a new idea I guess because I haven’t found anyone talking about it. Maybe it’s a silly idea, which is why I’m posting here in hopes someone with way more experience can help.

Going about the trade in RCI as we all know is unpredictable. I’ve scoured numerous other sites trying to figure out a way to do this. Nada.

Anyway, sorry for the rambling.

Ideas?

One possibility is to go to Mouseowners.com and look at the Rental and Trade Board. See if you can work out an exchange there.

Cheers.

You could also do the same on the TUG Free Exchange Listings

If your travel dates are flexible, you can trade into a one bedroom at Saratoga Springs. This would be your best option if a one bedroom will work for you.
Just note that not a lot of DVC members are willing to trade. It’s simply easier for them to rent their week due to the high demand. There are lots of old TUG threads regarding private trades for DVC (see two examples below).
You can also try renting your HGVC and using the cash towards a DVC rental (instead of trying to find a DVC member who is willing to work out a discounted rental rate in exchange for your HGVC)

Good luck

While you certainly may find someone to trade with, you would be competing with other options available to DVC owners such as easy cash rentals to brokers willing to pay good money (such as David’s Rentals). DVC owners can expect at least $13/point which translates to almost $3000 for a Magic season 1 bdm standard at SSR.

Offering to rent for a set amount of points somewhere south of $13/point and give up a HGVC rental just might work. However, you would need to find someone that wants/needs a new place to visit in lieu of an all cash rental.

Thanks for all the replies! We know how hard it is to do a trade with DVC, especially other than through RCI for a 1 Bedroom SSR...... This is why we are trying to do a discounted rental along with the trade to sweeten the deal.

Never know, may just get lucky......

If you have enough Hilton points, you can get a direct exchange with RCI. Why would you do an exchange and then trade with an owner of DVC? That is a step you can skip. No one will do the deal you are talking about. All Disney owners have great access to premium RCI offerings.

As a DVC owner I would not do the trade you are suggesting, at the times I've had points I was not using I put them with a points rental service. Little to no risk/hassle to me and $14 a point. I don't believe I'd ever trade DVC thru RCI but someone must be doing that since inventory does show up there. You should consider spending the $15 to join Tug which gives you access to the Sightings board, we see 1 bedrooms in SSR thru RCI fairly regularly. You might find someone to do this trade but I'd be surprised if you report success. Having said all that good luck

It is possible that some of the bHC locations might garner interest. But, as another owner of both HGVC abd DVC, U agree that, in general, this is an unlikely trade.

Cheers.

I used to own both. You could get lucky, but you need to plan very far in advance. There is the trade board on Mouseowners. If you construct an ad, make it more attractive by listing specific location that HGVC has that DVC doesn't. Maybe Waikoloa, ski week in Colorado, Europe, etc, something that the DVC owner can't easily get on their own. Keep in mind that most people bought DVC because they wanted to visit Disney all the time and when they don't, they can rent for a significant amount of money.

When I rent my DVC points I use mouseowners, disboards or one of the multiple facebook groups.

I also think the trade is unlikely to happen, you might be better off saving your HGVC points for next year and then rent directly from an owner.

If you want to rent a reservation between 7-11 months out you should expect to pay $18+ per point, less than 7 months you often find offers around $12-$15 but with that short to checkin the availability is very limited, and what good are cheap points with zero availability.

Thanks for the advice! We were looking to just list as points to let the owners pick where they want to go. I know this is all a long shot and that’s why we are looking so far in advance.

We have been exploring the options of just renting the points. We thought that we could use some of our current points to put towards a trade and sweeten the deal with still renting the “traded” points, just at a lower rate. Kinda 2 for 1 for the DVC owner.

This will be a second vacation in 2020 for us as we are going to the Valdoro in Breckenridge (3 Bed) in April.

I’ve also posted on mouseowners.com but I think that since we are brand new to the site we will be looked at as “scammers”. Just a family trying to go to Disney!

The only thing you can rent out per the HGVC rules is your home week. I'm not sure how, or if, they police this but you would be off-side your HGVC contract if you book an HGVC unit other than your exact Home unit using points and then rent it out.

They monitor your activity especially your guest certificate usage on non home week reservations. You’re within rights to rent home weeks but not with reservations made with points less than 9 months in other size units or other resorts.

Do it once in awhile and you won’t be flagged but become prolific and you risk sanctions
