Solution: make businesses stop polluting Lake Okeechobee. Easy.

sad. I wanted to buy a timeshare in Marco Island, but no longer.

Was just at Marco, there is no red tide. Map shows none or minimal currently there.

This is so sad. I could not bear to see beaches covered with dead sea life.

Go back even further. Reverse the massive watershed changes the government / army corp of engineers made several decades ago. Water used to flow from Okeechobee to the south through the everglades and was filtered on the way; now it flows directly to the east and west to the ocean. Lesson: don't f**k with Mother Nature.

I am always there in the winter months and never experienced red tide in Marco Island at that time.

We stayed at Bonita Springs about 25 years ago, over Christmas. That was our first encounter with red tide. We had never heard of it. There were dead fish all over the beach, and the people who were on the beach were all coughing. Needless to say, it was a beachless holiday for us.

Just got back from Marco Island yesterday - red tide there was "medium" - potential fish kill and respiratory distress. Weather was really crappy - so that was not an issue. Did not see any dead fish. Hope it goes away before we return 12/20!!

The article says this has been occurring for centuries.

Even up north (Lake Champlain, for example), the lakes have a similar issue with algae. The debate there continues as well- is it run off from the farms? Lawn fertilizers? Is it the septics or sewers, coupled with the storms and flooding?
