We bought a Roku 50" (+/-) smart TV last year. Cost was under $300. So it seems that the replacements aren't that costly. Of course the fact that those TV's are going into the landfill is awful, and all because of software issues. That is sad.

Also, according to Disney their Disney+ app is not available on Apple TV Generations 1-3. It is only available on the 4th generation Apple TV HD and Apple TV 4K. So even those separate streaming media devices aren't immune to becoming obsolete.

We bought a "smart" TV a few years ago, but we no longer use the "smart" features and instead use a Roku box because of these exact same issues. Much easier to upgrade a streaming device vs. a TV.

Always have used a Roku. Never a problem.

We have a recent smart TV too. (Samsung QLED Q8). It works just fine but I use the Roku Ultra as I like the picture better and quick responses better than the TVs' system. Plus, we already had the Roku so it was easy to experiment and keep using it. Now it seems Samsung and Netflix are having disagreements too. I sure hope Roku continues to allow most any application to be added. Really not interested in constantly needing to change devices to get around negotiating issues between companies.

It's not just smart TV's that won't support the newest streaming apps, my Roku streaming stick doesn't support Apple TV. I need to upgrade to a newer model....fortunately black Friday/cyber Monday is just a week away and I will upgrade then.

I wouldn’t call it fortunate for consumers, its built in obsolesence that makes if profitable for the manufacturers, just like BIC lighters.

There is no reason the so called Smart TV software cannot be upgraded to support new services or changes to existing. Its ripping off consumers and needs to be investigated by FTC, and maybe even EPA because they are ending up in landfills everywhere.
