DW wanted to get an enhanced ID drivers license, which is the same as the Real ID except it can be used instead of a passport to return to the US by land or sea from Canada, Mexico and some countries in the Caribbean. For the enhanced ID, you have to provide proof on any name changes, such as marriage. We brought our marriage certificate, but they said it wasn't acceptable because it didn't have an embossed notary seal. They wouldn't let her get the enhanced ID, but they did let her get the real ID license without proof of the name change. I had to call the state where we got married and paid $42 to get a copy of our marriage license that is notarized.
I don't know if all states do it, but Minnesota lets your start the real ID application process online, and prompts you for the different kinds of documents you'll need to meet the requirements. The social security card I had wasn't the right one. The real ones have pillars on the sides. The one I had must have been the tear off copy, which wasn't acceptable. Fortunately, I had my 1099-R that showed my social security number, and that was acceptable. It's good to take backup for all the required documents in case one won't work.
