12 Things You (Probably) Didn't Know About Pearl Harbor
From HistoryExtra/ The Official Website for BBC History Magazine and BBC World Histories Magazine/ historyextra.com

"The deadly surprise attack on the US Pacific Fleet at Pearl Harbor, launched without a declaration of war, made 7 December 1941 "a date which will live in infamy", declared President Franklin D Roosevelt. Early that Sunday morning, hundreds of Japanese planes sank or damaged 21 warships and destroyed more than 150 planes on nearby airfields; more than 2,000 Americans lost their lives.

But how much do you know about the attack and its consequences? How did the attack on Pearl Harbor affect the Second World War? And did Adolf Hitler declare war on the US on 11 December 1941 as a result of Pearl Harbor? Here, Professor Evan Mawdsley shares 12 lesser-known facts…

1
Pearl Harbor was not the beginning of the Pacific War
Japanese forces landed in northern Malaya, then a British colony, a couple of hours before the Pearl Harbor attack; meanwhile a larger Japanese force was disembarking off neutral Thailand. What the Japanese called the Hawaiian Operation was a supporting attack; the main blow was the Southern Operation, directed against Malaya, the Philippines and the Dutch East Indies. And Japan had already been engaged in a full-scale war against China for four-and-a-half years....."

Terrible either way. We went to Pearl Harbor a couple of years ago, very emotional day.

When I visited Pearl Harbor about ten years ago, I took the Bome of the Brave tour. Still one of the best tours i’ve Ever taken. They covered each of the points in the article. Great tour!!

Great article. Everyone should try and make the trip to Pearl Harbor and Arlington. Two very moving experiences. To sit there and still see oil leaking from the Arizona was bone chilling.

After listening to a rather simplistic audiobook on Pearl Harbor (The Lieutenant's Nurse by Sara Ackerman; historical/fiction) I wanted to find a deeper historical account of the attack. I'm at the end of Infamy by John Toland and recommend it for reading or listening.

If you are interested in further reading ...

At Dawn We Slept by Gordon Prange is an excellent comprehensive review of the events leading up to and following Pearl Harbor, and often quoted by current authors. Another is Pearl Harbor: FDR Leads the Nation Into War by Steven M. Gillon. All the Gallant Men by Donald Stratton is as the title reads, A Sailor's Firsthand Account of Pearl Harbor. All are excellent, informational and very well written accounts. I should warn you that the Prange book is more than 800 pages long, and at times a formidable read, but well worth the effort. You may recognize Steven Gillon as he is often interviewed on the History Channel Pearl Harbor specials. Don Stratton's memoir is so immersive it seems as though you are right there with him. He talks candidly about his suffering and struggle with forgiveness. This one should be required reading for high school students IMO!
