My husband just spent half an hour on the phone with someone who wanted to sell him a promotional package for 5 nights at an all-inclusive resort on the Mexican Riviera. First weird detail: phone call started with a 'bot that he thought said Marriott wanted to offer us a vacation package - he clicked through to a live person who asked how they could help him. "But you called me". They sent him to another live person who offered him a 5 night stay at a "gold crown resort" in Cancun for $999, redeemable anytime in the next 2 years. After some further conversation, John was offered several other resorts (Bluebay, Grand Oasis Tulum?) and when he continued asking questions, was sent to this website
http://www.grandrivieraresorts.com/index.html
The deal was also sweetened to $699 total price redeemable for up to 4 years. When asked directly, the sales person admitted that a 90" in-person pitch was also part of the package. It seemed telling to me that there is absolutely no mention anywhere I could find on that website regarding timeshares or sales presentations.
We continued for a bit with him on speakerphone. The sales pitch was about how beautiful the resort was. We said it did look beautiful, but that Grand Riviera Resorts was an unknown entity to us, unlike Hilton or Marriott or Wyndam, and that we were aware that Mexican timeshare programs could be problematic. "But we're with RCI! And you've been prequalified!" to which I responded "but your company has not been prequalified by us".
John eventually advised Mr Rodriguez that we were ending the conversation and hung up. Might have been a nice trip but gut said No.

We've been receiving a ton of calls like that. We bought the first one which was 2 weeks for $600 + bonuses, but haven't used it yet so hoping for the best. We've hung up on all the rest.

There have been a few threads and posts about this. We get these calls too but not as often as before. Since we were RCI members, I'm assuming our name and phone number were given (or sold) to these two-bit travel agencies by an RCI rogue or disgruntled employee. These agencies assume that, since you are an RCI member, that you like to travel a lot and hence, you might be a good candidate for wanting to buy these packages.

When we do get these calls and the sales person introduces him/herself, I first tell them firmly that I am not giving my credit card number or info over the phone to a total stranger who calls me from some company I've never heard of. The person usually ends the conversation right there.
