I did a search but the threads are old. Haven't been to Aruba since 2004 and have a trip planned in December. Wondering which car rental companies are recommended. Thanks!

We used Tropic Car Rental this past June with no issues. They were very efficient. Would definitely recommend.

We have used Tropic the last few years and have not had any problems. I would recommend making a reservation.

Tropic is great but you have to book early as they run out of cars!

Just curious - why not rent from the biggies - Alamo, budget, etc?

Last time we rented from Budget - $225 for a mid size for the week.
Next trip is Alamo (holiday week) $175 with Alamo

Are the mom/pop places there cheaper? Or do you just prefer to deal with the locals?

I reserved Alamo using 32,000 Chase Sapphire points. They say that the value of the rental is $481.

We have used Alamo and Thrifty. Neither is all that great. Older beat up cars, probably a lot like some of the local guys. The big guys in international locations tend to just be affiliates and don't really operate like the domestic locations.

I’ve used the big boys (Hertz,Budget) and a smaller one (Jays). Honestly, I’ve never had a problem with the big guys and prefer to drive the car off the airport as opposed to being shuttled to a location to do paper work then having to drive back to the airport to pick up the rest of my party (same process but in reverse when dropping off the car). Budget has been cheaper than almost everyone the last few trips and as of now they’re my go to...

Just got back from Aruba. We booked a compact with Avis through JetBlue, we paid $180, plus $24.95 for the American Express Premium Car Rental Insurance. We ended up with a Kia Piccanto with 10,000 kms on the clock. Completely uneventful rental experience, picked car up at airport, everything was great.
