Received a phone call from a marketing group inviting us to attend a meeting regarding updates on our timeshare at one of the local hotels in our area. It included a free dinner. My hubby and I decided to attend. In reality, it turned out to be a consumer advocacy group making a sales pitch. Upon our arrival they turned us over to a Relief Counselor, who tried to get us to give them money in exchange for filing a lawsuit through their attorneys to cancel our timeshare contract. We looked them up on the internet and the group is based in Missouri. Have any of you TUG Members had any experience dealing with this company or any other of a similar nature? Please respond. Thank you.

There are many ways to dispose of an unwanted TS w/o being swindled by these scam artists. Sell it, give it away, give it back, stop paying and offer a deed in lieu of foreclosure. None of these methods cost you an upfront fee. Any outfit that charges an up-front fee will deliver nothing but grief, and you'll still own your TS.

...regarding updates on our timeshare...

...in exchange for filing a lawsuit through their attorneys to cancel our timeshare contract.

So can you clarify? Were you looking to "update" your timeshare or were you looking to supposedly cancel your timeshare contract?

It is a scam. Don't sign anything or give these people any money. We frequently get calls to go to one of these dinners for a timeshare we haven't owned for 8 years.

Back when I had too much time on my hands I used to attend solicitations like this just to see what their pitch was. What was most astounding to me was how successful they were with many of the attendees who didn't have a clue and who just wanted a way out.

I am trying to sell 2 timeshares and the websites I have looked at all charge an upfront fee (eBay, redweek,...). Do you know of any that don't? (besides TUG :) ) I can't even give it away! One resort charges a lot to take it back and the other not too much but then we are out of a LOT of money. So depressing. I lose sleep over this.

Yes, E-Bay and Red Week charge upfront fees but those are very minimal and reasonable. What we warn against is these companies that charge upfront fees in the hundreds and thousands, especially if they call you out of the blue claiming they can sell or rent out your TS fetching you money beyond your wildest dreams.

And these resorts that charge to take it back, how much are they charging? It is quite common for some to ask you to pay closing costs and the next MF. And yes, sadly, whatever direction you choose, you are going to be out a lot of money. That's the sad nature of the TS industry today. We are just giving you advice to try to lose a lot less money.

what do you consider a "large fee" to give your ownership back?

have you attempted to list it for sale on the resale market for $1 and offer to pay closing costs?

I usually counter with some sort of offer like, I'll pay you double your price AFTER the timeshare has been successfuly transferred out of our name AND the transfer has been approved by the timeshare resort. Without fail they've declined to essentially double their money. A sure sign it's a scam.

I wouldn't say a LOT of money in all cases. DRI has been taking back contracts for a sum of $250 per contract so long as all fee's are paid up to date. We transferred 2 contracts back to them for a total of $500 a couple of years ago. Simple, easy and no worries they wouldn't approve who we were transferring the contrast too, which can be an issue with companies utilizing Viking Ship Trusts to dispose of timeshares.

Spinnaker, OTOH, charges a $1,500 fee just to transfer a single annual usuage contract. They charge $750 for an EOY contract.......and that's if YOU find someone to take the deed. That seems a little excessive to me.
