I have 8000 points available for 2018. I'm wondering what the best way to get some value out of them (not using them). Use them to rent somewhere (where?) in a good week (what week) then rent that out? Rent/sell them directly (what's their market value)? Something else?

These were unused 2017 points that came along with a purchase of an 8400 Pt. Lagoon Tower buy. I saved them to 2018 so they need to be used in 2018 (can't convert to HH points, etc.).

Book an extended trip to Hawaii. Visit both Big Island and Oahu. That is my suggestion anyway. Otherwise book any HGVC property.

I don't want to use the points (well, I'd love to, but won't be able to). Wife will only go to Ohau or Maui. Already going to Oahu in August, nothing available to "add" there, and no Hilton in Maui. So I'm trying to get best value.

Can you dump them into RCI and get another year?

Or are you close enough to a resort for a staycation?

Its more a problem of, once Aug 23 comes along, daughter is back in school and there's little chance to get away. Already going to Hawaii for 12 days and England for 10 days in the summer. Would prefer to get a win-win, with me getting some $ value, and someone getting some points they can use for a good price.

The rules say you are not supposed to rent (sell) a booking made with saved-points.
... Only a home-week booking made with your annual allotment.
... But you can "give" a GC for a club-booking to a relative or "acquaintance."

What about trading, as in I'll trade you 8000 points for $2000 cash? :)

You could deposit your 8,000pts into RCI and stretch them out for another 2 years.

So one could deposit them into RCI, then rent a highly desirable RCI location, then rent that location to someone here or on Redbook or whatever, correct?

If that's feasible, then I guess the operative questions are what's a highly desirable/high demand RCI location and time?

I would wait as long as possible in 2018 to deposit into RCI, that way you get the maximum amount of time. In other words, if the 8,000pts expire 12/31/2018, then I would deposit into RCI around 12/30/2018 to get 2 full years of extension.

This might be too much work for you, but I would ...

- wait until Club Season opens for the current reservation you're holding that used your 2018 points.

-then, release and rebook the same reservation. When you rebook the reservation, it should pull your saved points first. Now you have your 2018 points back which you can use in 2018 or save to 2019.

This suggestion wouldn't make sense if you know you won't be able to use all 16,400 points in 2019. You'd be in the same boat you are now.

You can't rent an RCI exchange. That violates RCI terms and conditions.

Sadly, or not sadly actually, that's the case. I'd be in the same boat a year later. (I plan some things well in advance; already know I'm going to England and Ireland (golf), plus a week in Maui (Marriott) and a week in Waikiki, all in the summer of 2019. Otherwise, that may have worked.

Is it an "exchange" if you're using your own points?

If you own Oahu, why not book a week in peak season and rent it out?

All RCI bookings with HGVC points are exchanges.
Booking RCI is external to the HGVC system. You "exchange" points for a stay at an RCI resort.
... Even if it's a trade back into an HGVC resort, it's trading thru the RCI system.
Renting an RCI booking can get your renter booted and your RCI rights terminated.

Do some peep use saved-points to make a HGVC club-booking and rent that booking to strangers?
I'm sure they do. The rationale is that, once they "meet" their renters, they are new-found friends.
Renting a club booking to "friends" apparently is legal. ...Not that I encourage that sort of thing.

Unfortunately yes.

Now, if one were inclined (again, technically against the rules), I'd say you're *less likely* to get whacked by Hilton if you were to hypothetically use your saved points to book something and then rent it.

But RCI will have no mercy whatsoever if they find out. They will not only unceremoniously cancel your renter's stay (and not tell them), they will most certainly get your RCI account whacked and then more than likely Hilton will have something to say about that as well.

RCI (at least used to) monitor sites for renting and see if they could figure out if you were using an RCI Exchange.

Although:
It *used* to be that RCI would let you charge (get reimbursed) for the exchange fee and guest certificate fee but that was it. I don't know if that's still true or not.

HGVC owners dont have an individual RCI account, we use the corporate portal account, everyone on the same one. Would be interesting if they did catch someone renting exchanges made with HGVC points.

Probably not enough upside. Better play is to divy the points up among the grown kids and let them have some weekend vacations.

Not sure I saw this said, but you can rescue the points into HGVC 2019 instead of RCI (for a fee) and they will get used first next year. This at least keeps you from losing them.

Don't think so. These were 2017 points that were already saved once (for use in 2018).
They can't be rescued again. But they may be deposited to RCI (for a fee) and used in 2019.
