New owner here, have a question about borrowing. Just to confirm, according to the website, it looks like you can only borrow points from a future year if making an express reservation (within three months of check in date). Can anyone confirm if this is true?

True!! You can always rent points too, I'm not quite sure how that works however

There's not a lot to it. When you get to the payment page, if you don't have enough points to complete the reservation, you'll be given the option to borrow points (if within 90 days of check-in) or rent points (at $12/1,000 points). Needless to say, paying for an entire reservation would be quite expensive.

If you cancel a reservation for which you either borrowed points or paid for rented points, the borrowed points and payment are returned whence they came.

You can also rent (and perhaps borrow) points to finish the LAST night of a reservation if you are short "less than a night's stay". This can be done during the standard reservation period.

FYI, if you are renting at $12/1000, I believe that you can only rent up to the amount of yearly point you own. Someone will correct me if I'm wrong about that. I used to use this feature a lot when I was working on a grant and stayed at timeshares. I ran my use year out of points on purpose so that I could use my credit card associated with the grant to pay for my Wyndham stays. Luckily I was going mid-week and the resorts were available at the 90-day mark.
