I got a scammer call last night at 7pm (they always call after dinner). Heavy Filipino accent said I was invited to the grand opening of the new Southwest Travel Center in Rancho Cordova. I stopped him in his tracks when I said I moved away from the Sacto area over two years ago, won’t be able to attend. It must be a travel agent got some old Southwest contact data because I have a rapid rewards account.

I would think you'd need a Rapid Rewards number. Not hard to get one. Just go to the SW website.
Yes, you would need one, but that is easy to do on their site.
We have held a SW CP for years. It has been valuable to us. We use points to pay for our tickets and DD goes free. Mix that in with TS stays and cost effective times away are easy.

How long after making that 1st purchase before we receive notification re: companion pass? Or is it automatic ... ?

This is quite different from the Alaska offer. W Alaska you can bring a companion with you on ONE flight per year.
A companion pass on SW means that for EVERY flight that the card holder takes their companion (must be specified as a specific person) can travel the SAME itinerary and pay only the taxes. With this deal it is every flight through the end of 2018.
