I am going with my family to Cancun next week. We have some friends that are staying in Cozumel. What will be the best way to go there for a day visit? Do we need to rent a car or will public transportation do it? Do tour buses make this trip? We will be staying an the Royal Sands.

Hope to hear from you experienced Cancun veterans.

Ferries leave Playa del Carmen throughout the day for Cozumel. It does not take more than 30 or 40 minutes to cross.

You can rent cars and scooters on the other side.

I haven't done it but I don't think the ferry is very expensive.

For 6.5 pesos you can take the city bus to the downtown Cancun Transit center and from there take a bus for 40 pesos ($4) to Playa. I don't believe it is air conditioned and it will be about an hour bus ride +/-.

I made the run from the Cancun airport to Playa to Cozumel in May. The bus (Riviera Bus lines) was 80 pesos (about $8) each (it was air conditioned...nice and cool). The ferry from Playa to Cozumel was 110 pesos (about $11). I'm not sure what the price difference will be departing from the bus station vs the airport but it shouldn't be much. As for renting a car, you don't want to do that. There is no car ferry at Playa. You'd have to drive a little further to Calica, and it's first come first serve, with no quarantee you'd get across in a reasonable time frame. Much better to do the bus->ferry->either car rental or cab in Cozumel

Hecti, if anyone in your party tends toward seasickness, be sure to tell him/her to take meds or apply a patch a few hours before taking the ferry. It can often be a rough crossing, more so in the afternoon. The morning was pretty bouncy, however, as well on the day that we did it.

The quickest way to Coz is to take a collectivo (white van with green stripe) . The cost is about $9 US dollars pp and takes about 30 minutes
(or less) from Cancun to PDC. Once in PDC, they'll drop you off within walking distance to the ferry bldg.
The collectivos gather in downtown Cancun across the street from the bus terminal. They all charge the same, just make sure to ask before you board.

I've also taken the air-conditioned bus which is about $3 or $4 US dollars. The driver makes frequent stops along the way picking up passengers on the side of the road. It's a cheap way to go if you're not in a hurry and just want to enjoy the ride.
