Hey folks, I've been trolling the threads a bit to get more intel on how to get more points from MVC. We have owned a Gold week at Harbour Lake since 2008, and last year we transitioned it to what I think is called a hybrid week (we can select each year to use it, transfer it to 1950 points, 90000 MR points, or deposit to II).

Wife and I sat through another presentation recently where they wanted around $28k for 2250 points to put us into the VIP status. I have no idea what VIP status is, but the salesman said that threshold would jump to 6000 points instead of the 4000 points it requires today, and if we got to 4000 before the change we would be grandfathered into the VIP system. So first question, is that accurate? And what benefit is there to have VIP status?

Next, while I hate those presentations, I was considering it given the slight per point discount from list and some of the perks (lifetime gold status), but I asked if I could grab lunch and come back with a decision and was told no. And I have a life rule that if the deal disappears if I walk out of the room, I don't take it. So I've been looking at buying more points on the secondary market. Is that possible, and would that apply to this VIP status if I bought them not directly from Marriott? I haven't seen much about how to buy points from third parties. Can someone share some insight into that, like where to buy, how it works, etc.? A link would be fine, I'm happy to read up more, but I don't know where to find it. Thanks!

crvz,
That’s not a hybrid week.
It’s an enrolled week.
You enrolled your week in Marriott’s destination club.
Each year you chose to stay, exchange on II or elect points.

Destination club has different membership levels depending on how many points you have (or how many points your week is worth were you to elect points).
I am guessing this is what he meant by VIP- but 4000-6999 points only gets you to select which is barely any benefit over the basic owner level.
If you log on to the MVC site and search on benefit levels you will get the chart.
Try this link-
https://owners.marriottvacationclub...mMwNmI3NTI0MDQ0YmU1NGRhNzcxMTgwMWY5OGZlNTU2ZA

Lots of good info on that site- start under the education tab.

Tons of info on this site on the wisdom of buying additional points. Search around or I’m sure others will respond.
I can’t imagine buying points just to get from owner to select membership level. The major advantage of select is you can book a 7+ night points reservation at 13 months instead of 12 months. Sounds like a sales tactic.

Actually, a standard owner can also book a 7+ Night point reservation at 13 months as well. They just pay a 20% premium until 12 months. Select just eliminates that 20% premium to book at 13 months.

About 8 months ago, I bought 6,000 points not through MVC but from a timeshare resale office. The total price for everything, including getting them enrolled at MVC, was a little over $36,000, or about $6 a point. The process was very smooth and the middle man worked well for us.

My thought is, to quote Meghan Trainor:

Thanks Jim,
I should have worded that better.

I should also add that there may be changes relating to the new rewards program based on dc membership level or such, I was told that was TBD when I asked earlier in the summer.
