Several years ago, I used to see sightings postings for LOTS of Disney weeks, including 1 and 2 BR units, at many of the different Disney resorts. Now it seems there are only 1 BR units, and only at SSR. Does anyone have an hypothesis for why? Were there many unsold Disney weeks years ago, and now they are selling out?

Disney likely never deposited developer-owned inventory; they were a successful hotelier before they were a timeshare developer, and they are able to rent inventory to the public.

Disney (like many other mini-systems) controls deposits. Right now, they seem to be erring on the side of allowing owners to have more access to high-demand reservations, depositing only the "leftovers." Other systems (e.g. Wyndham) have done the same thing.

JMHO... Because they can!

Why did they raise park tickets? Because they can.
Why did they add resort parking fees? Because they can.
Why are they placing restrictions on DVC Resales? Because they can.
Why do they charge a $190 RCI resort fee on exchanges? Because they can.
Why do they primarily deposit Saratoga Springs? Because they can.

Of course I’m assuming other factors are coming into play such as
  • Disney Saratoga Springs is the largest DVC and simply has more inventory (link)
  • Address owner complaints (why own?)
    • Exchange rentals on websites like eBay (still goes on today even with the cutbacks - see thumbnail).
    • Cheaper to trade into DVC than to own.
  • Drive ownership. Ownership has privileges. Draw a line between RCI exchange access vs DVC owner access.

I think Disney only places points based on members trading out. I own DVC points and in general I'm much more likely to rent them than to trade them so I think Disney need to deposit fewer weeks and if you look at DVC availability (especially last minute availability, which is what is being posted now) it is almost entirely SSR. In general 1 bedrooms are the easiest to book and studios are the hardest so I suspect that's why all we see on RCI is 1 bedrooms at SSR. I watch RCI for disney resorts and SSR is routinely available so you will be able to get a 1 bed at SSR closer to your date but I don't think there is any chance for a 2 bed. you might be able to get 2 1 beds but that would be hideously expensive. I think you would be better off with Bonnet creek.

What is your way/system of "watching" for DVC? Checking it every few days or . . . ? I would like to get systematic with doing this and would love advice.

A fairly easy method for TUG Members is to monitor the Sightings forum (visible only to Members).

I'll nudge you towards the $30 plan (3 years of membership). FWIW, I've been a member for ages and had never heard of the Expert Personal Assistance Plan ($49). And here I thought we, as a community, were all the assistance one might truly require! LOL

I joined, and logged myself off and back in, but I don't notice any obvious "Sightings" forum. Is it a child thread of . . . something else? Help!

I think you should get a welcome email that explains how to activate your membership.

I set up the Disney resorts as favorites and check most days for availability (although I’m on vacation at the moment and have been a bit slack the past week or so). You coulld set an OGS for dv06 but it does not catch everything since Disney deposits both points and weeks. There have been some recently that are listed priority access so platinum helps. I think looking at the sighting forum is a good method too

I also think the economy being so strong (compared to when the sightings several years ago were showing much better availability) is really limiting exchanging opportunities. See the increase in Disney World park attendance between 2010/2011 and 2015.

Interesting thought. Also, with Star Wars land going in, it will only get more intense, I would expect.
