i am considering buying either a 1 or 2BD unit at Lawai Beach Resort, hoping for some advice since I am brand new to timesharing. I plan on mostly going to LBR but, if I do exchange my week to vacation elsewhere through one of the exchange systems, say II or RCI, will I be exchanged into the same amount of bedrooms? We are empty nesters and the majority of time won’t be needing the extra bedroom but occasionally the option would be nice. Is it worth the extra upfront costs to own the week in the bigger unit?
I really appreciate all the help I have gained on this site. Thanks in advance.
Edit: I copied this into the “new to timesharing “ forum, admins feel free to delete from this forum if more appropriate in the other

You will get better trades with a 2 bedroom rather than with a one. The maintenance fee for a 2 bedroom shouldn't be much more than for a one, so if it isn't a financial strain then I would suggest going for a 2 bedroom. We are empty nesters now too but like to book 2 bedroom units whenever possible as we find most 2 bedroom units also have 2 bathrooms. You can always trade down to a 1 bedroom, often for less points or TPU's but its harder to trade up to a 2 with a 1. If you find a 2 bedroom that is a lockout (a full 1 bedroom with a studio & kitchenette attached) then you can deposit each separately and get 2 weeks for the price of 1 maintenance fee.

We didn't have any children when we purchased our first timeshare about 37 years ago, so we just bought a 1 bedroom - we have been kicking ourselves ever since because the difference in price between a 1 & 2 bedroom was only $500.! (Total cost of our beachfront unit in St. Augustine was $2500. & that was from the developer!)

The better buildings and views are the 2 bdr units. There are few 1bdr units. Nice place ... enjoy!

When I try to exchange into a harder-to-get location (like Hawaii, Carmel, Ca.) I sometimes deposit a 2 BR (lower season unit) and request only a 1 BR. I've had 3 exchanges into Carmel and next year am going to Marriott Maui using that tactic. My reasoning is that if there are only two people requesting the same unit and they have a 1 BR and I have a 2 BR, then I will most-likely get the exchange and they won't.
