We will be there over Winter Break/ New Years.
Ages: 7, 18, 36, 39, 41, 71.
Youngest figure skates. Teen and one of the 30-somethings ski/snowboard. The senior hikes and does some light snowshoeing. But me and hubs are not cold weather people. He's fine to just hang out in the room or in cars on scenic drives. But honestly I'm a little nervous I'll go stir-crazy so I need some ideas.
Thanks in advance!

No close skiing there, but I believe there are some good sledding hills (if there is enough snow).

The road into Rocky Mountain Nation Park is kept open up to the Many Points curve throughout the winter -- that is one of the most scenic outlook points on the road so I would highly recommend. Check into a snow cat tour. Lots more ideas here.

Tour the Stanley Hotel (inspiration for The Shining, and used for the outside shots).

Lots of good tourist shopping -- unique shops, etc. and good restaurants.

Note: I believe the road from Estes Park to Loveland (US 34) is going to be closed all winter again this year for continuing repair of the 2013 flood. You will need to take US 36 to Estes Park.

You could always take a ride to Boulder and Pearl Street. Lots of shops and restaurants, etc. You could visit the Leanin' Tree Art Museum and the Celestial Seasonings Factory tour in that area as well.

Then there is the Red Rock Amphitheater and Dinosaur Park right nearby that.

The Stanley Hotel has tours. Book on line. Also, the Lazy B Chuckwagon Show/Dinner nearby is entertaining. You can get tickets on line as well.

Check out the YMCA of the Rockies- maybe they have some winter activities for kids going on as well.

Try to see as much of Rocky Mountain National Park as you can.

In Estes Park, there is an historic movie theater so you could kill a couple of hours there. There is a really nice recreation path in Estes Park along the river. And lots of shops and restaurants on town.

Worse comes to worse, you can make the trip into Denver for a day excursion as well.

Yes, we have been to Pearl Street in Boulder a few times. And Red Rock Amphitheater as well. My sister lives in the area.
I'm sure we will do a few things in Boulder and Denver.

Yes, I looked and they have a pond that freezes over where they let people skate on it. This would be a first for my son as he has only skated indoors or in man-made holiday rinks outdoors, never on a frozen lake or pond. He is excited about it.

This is great to know. I like old theaters and this is the kind of thing we could all do together as a family. Thank you!

Thank you for the video! We'll be in Estes Park in March. I'd be interested in hearing about cold weather activities also. :)

Update/ Trip Report:

My mother in law (who is our neighbor) was diagnosed with lung cancer a week before our trip. She already had diabetes and heart disease. The cancer was found unexpectedly when husband took her to urgent care for shortness of breath, fearing another heart attack. Indeed her heart is weaker and she was in heart failure but we also learned of the lung tumor while at the ER. A few tests and dr appointments later and she had an official diagnosis as a Christmas present. Obviously, this changed our plans a bit.

Simultaneously my sister (who lives near Boulder CO) was due to give birth to my niece. And indeed, baby came a bit early and thus was there waiting to meet us. I really did not want to cancel.

So husband stayed home and I took my son and my mom to Estes Park.

First, we had too much luggage to get to the airport in one car. I guess we had too many baby gifts etc. so two car rides to airport.

Then our flight was delayed. When it finally arrived hours later the first passenger off was on a stretcher so delay was likely due to medical emergency.

When we arrived in Denver we had to get a bigger car than we had planned for due to all the luggage. Car rental costs ended up being nearly a grand! Ugh

Oh and extra fees for a luggage cart to get from baggage claim to shuttle. It’s not far but we just had too much stuff.

But made the best of it and went to meet baby! Sooooo cute!

Because we arrived later than planned we weren’t able to drive up during daylight. I didn’t want to drive unfamiliar mountain roads in the dark, especially this time of year when there might be snow or ice.

Kiddo was getting over something and now grandma was getting sick. So we couldn’t stay with my sister and her new baby, too risky.

So I booked a hotel for the night. You see where this is headed... more unexpected costs adding up.

But we got a good rest plus great breakfast buffet. Met with baby again (no touching) and headed up the mountain.

The cabins at Rams Horn Resort are very cute and well stocked. The decor is not my taste but suits the cabins.

For various reasons we had to make four yes FOUR grocery shopping trips. I swear that was the most expensive and time consuming grocery shopping I’ve ever had to do for just one week.

Because of the sicknesses we didn’t do a whole lot of adventuring. But We drove into Rocky Mountain National Park a number of times, visited the visitor center and went to the sledding area (ski and snowboarding is allowed in that same area - Hidden Valley- they just have no lift). Did a bit of sledding. That was fun. The resort has sleds you can borrow for free.

Nearly every day we went to the YMCA frozen pond for ice skating. My kiddo loved it! I definitely recommend it.

Other than that we just watched TV and movies or hung out in our cabin. The WiFi at Rams Horn is great!

Along the way my laptop was stolen. I suspect it was during one of the grocery trips when I hadn’t properly locked the car. Either that or I left it at the hotel, but they couldn’t find it.

Our trip home was fine, no troubles. But it turns out my husband was sick the whole time and was basically no use to his mother.

Wow! Sorry about your motherinlaw. Terrible. Hope she is doing as well as she can be.

Does not seem like you really had what I would call a vacation! Crazy stuff!

That stinks about your flight. I just really hate flying- it's always something.

Something I have learned in my many years of life is the need to simplify- even more so in times of stress. Need to intentionally make things easier for yourself.

Carry-ons only. First off, for the baby, I would have brought a check and maybe a small gift.

When we were at Rams Horn, we bought frozen meals for each nights' dinner. Breakfast was cereal/oatmeal/eggs/bacon. Bought some juice and milk, bread and some lunch meat and a few snacks. And some type of power aide drink to take with us in the park to keep hydrated. That's it. Easy peasy. We also had a few granola bars from home we had taken on the plane, and coffee and tea bags. Oh- and we did purchase some alcohol when there. LOL! Only went to the big supermarket once and the little one near Rams Horn once just for a couple of things.

As for your computer, you probably had a lot on your mind. A shame you lost it. That would make me nuts!

At least you had fun with the sledding and skating and did wind down a little bit when there. But- maybe this was a trip you should have postponed for another time, but I understand how you didn't want to.

Thanks for the ideas so far in this thread. Can anyone describe the weather in the Estes Park area during the early March timeframe? Will there still be snow?

Thanks!

No way to predict. This year the snow pack in Colorado is the worst in 30 years. But March is our snowiest month. Honestly, it could be 70 and sunny, or 0 and dumping snow -- in the same week.
