Am I correct in assuming that regardless of whether you buy into points or weeks, if you exchange thru II or RCI you will always pay an exchange fee?
Yes, if you exchange. That means you deposit your week into an exchange company, then exchange it for another resort. Thus, the cost of your exchanged vacation will be the maintenance fee you paid on your own timeshare, plus the exchange fee and the annual membership fee of the exchange company..
The exchange companies also have "bonus " weeks which have a $$ rate which do not require a deposit. For example, RCI has "Extra Vacations " or "Last Call" which have a price ( plus tax) .
We have been using other exchange companies which maY have smaller inventories but have free membership , lower exchange fees and great bonus programs .
For example. Platinum Interchange (platinuminterchange.com) gives you a bonus week for every deposited week 120 days out, thus, reducing your costs greatly since the maintenance fee on your deposit would be halved.
DAE .. dial an exchange (Daelive.com) offers bonus weeks at wonderful prices, and again no membership fee.
We also use SFXresorts.com which takes gold crown level resorts only but again has great member benefits .
Every company has its own procedures (or rules) and pros and cons for using them.
I just wrote an article for Timesharing Today magazine entitled "Winning the Timeshare Game."
It's lots of fun to "play" and TUG is the best place to learn . You've come to the right website!
