The news that came out yesterday in the HGV Club Traveler that the SW Florida affiliates will be bookable online by the end of the year will make these more interesting for us, and we'll certainly start browsing these for availability. I'm not a fan of constantly calling in to check availability and having to filter the data through a customer service associate, so these resorts being unavailable online has been a non-starter for us up until now. I understand availability can be spotty at best, and the launch of online access will probably exacerbate that limited availability even more by making it easier to shop. But I do have a couple questions:

1) For those who have been able to book these properties, how do they compare in quality, furnishings, amenities, etc to regular HGVC owned and managed resorts? Are they on par with regular HGVC or are they more like typical RCI Gold Crown resorts that may be "nice" but a notch below HGVC?

2) If there is anyone that is familiar with Eagles Nest and Charter Club on Marco Island as well as Marriott's Crystal Shores, how would you compare the two HGVC-affiliated resorts with Marriott's Crystal Shores in location, furnishings, amenities, etc.

I would say that most of the SW FL affiliates are in the "nice but a notch below HGVC" category. Eagle's Nest is probably the nicest affiliate that I am aware of and it is also a bit newer than most. I own at both Charter Club and Surf Club and although we love our weeks there and they do a decent job of keeping them up to date, it is obvious that they are older resorts.

However, one place where the Charter Club shines is in the amenities. When you stay, you have free access to rental bikes, hobbie cat sail boats (they will even sail with you and give a free lesson!), kayaks, paddle boards, plus the usual tennis, basketball, pickle ball courts. Last year when we stayed, my conservative estimate was that we used $300-400 worth of rentals compared to having to rent the same things at other resorts on the island.

Am I correct in saying that both Eagles Nest and Charter Club have more units than the majority of the SW Florida resorts?

I am an owner at the Eagle's Nest and Crystal Shores. In addition to the prior comments the Eagle's Nest, while their units are nicely done, does not match up against Crystal Shores. There is no advantage to either location or beach, they are not that far apart. Also, the resort grounds of Crystal Shores are far superior to the Eagle's Nest. The superiority of Crystal Shores is definitely reflected in their maint. fees!

Yes, those are probably the largest two SW FL properties by a good margin.

The HGVC Florida affiliate properties are older, smaller, well maintained resorts.
The Marriott Crystal Shore property is a newer mega resort in comparison.

HGVC has several videos which will give you an idea.

Thanks alwysonvac. The videos are particularly helpful.

Are those unit numbers shown above the TOTAL units at that location or the number that have joined/participate in HGVC? I recognize that even if the numbers shown are those that are part of HGVC, that doesn't mean they all get put into the HGVC pool in any given year.

Thanks to PigsDad and jhac007 as well. Exactly the info I was looking for.

I believe it’s the total number of units at each location.

Sunset Cove still shows the total number of units as 36 but it’s no longer managed by HGVC. Previous HGVC Sunset Cove owners were grandfathered. HGVC membership no longer transfers with Sunset Cove resale.

I believe that Shell Island is the same. Can we still book those two using HGVC points?

Did not know that, so you’re definitely correct it’s a possibility. Has anyone recently booked it via hgvc? I get offered sunset cove when calling in from time to time, but haven’t been offended shell island so I guess that’s what made me assume!

If I remember my reading correctly, Shell Island has some units that are fully owned by individuals and that was the genesis of their pull out from Hilton. I don’t think there are many HGVC units left there so that could account for the lack of Shell Island units available for HGVC members.

Here’s what the HGVC Disclosure document states (see below).
However as stated earlier, it doesn’t mean the units make it into the HGVC pool on any given year. Owners could use their week, rent it, or deposit it with an exchange company (II, RCI, SFX, etc).
