That August 29 date for DHS was a great surprise to us (as it was to most people, I think) and at the same time was a little comforting. We booked our 1 bedroom at BWV for end of January at the 11 month window knowing that WDW would likely be much busier than usual for that time of year. Now I’m hoping that many of the folks who were waiting for the announcement before they booked their trips will visit in the fall as opposed to piling in when we’re there!
The same for us...we'll be at WDW for a split stay over Christmas/New Years break. Now we're wondering about FPs and access to GE.
Rise of the Resistance won't be open on Aug 29th and there will initially be no FP availability for Millennium Falcon: Smuggler’s Run. Also, there are no restaurants that have ADRs. So as things stand there is no way to guarantee entry to GE other than arriving early and standing in line. Will there be FPs for MFSR by December? Will they be an additional charge? Will RotR be open by then? Not to mention all the questions surrounding DVC split stays.
It's going to be a long summer...

We will be there the week before, leaving on the 30th, but we won't be rushing to HS and dealing with the crowds on the 29th. We will wait till the crowds die down. We wanted to try Volcano Bay at Universal anyway, so maybe will make the 29th our Volcano Bay day and skip any WDW parks even on the 29th, since it might be a crazy day anywhere or just relax at the pool and make the 29th a resort day. Many are upset who planned Sept and October trips, hoping to avoid the crowds around Disney's original announcement that Galaxy would be opening late fall.

We always do split stay by design. We enjoy experiencing two trips in one vaca and have never had a problem making FP in MDE, 60 days from the first stay for the entire vaca. Hoping the change in the split stay rules in regard to not being able to make FP for the second stay till 60 days, will be modified soon.
