Had to cancel week because of Dorian

I had a reservation for a 3 bedroom at Grand Beach for August 31 - Sept 7. Unfortunately, Dorian did not co-operate and we had to cancel. Since I booked with an AC, II says......too bad. They said I should have bought travel insurance, but I couldn't warrant the cost of the travel insurance for a week that only cost $258. Oh well.......

Unfortunately that is how it works. You took the gamble knowing the season and lost this time. There was a reason it only cost $258.

Most of the time it is a gamble but in some instances there is no choice.

I received a high trading AC as a good gesture from a resort that unit I checked into was horrible and I used an AC to move to another resort.

Now I have in a few weeks a trade into coastal SC. If the storm causes damage, the area or resort might not be open or in condition that I would want to go.

I normally purchase eplus but with an AC you can’t so lesson learned. Never accept an AC as a replacement week.

Truthfully not very upset, knew if something came up the week could be lost, part of the timeshare risks. Overall have lost very few weeks in my long affiliation with II.

I've never bought travel insurance but we're checking into Hilton Head Sept 8 and wondering if I should. Does it cover weather-relatedI t resort closings? Where do I get it? I traded my Marriott into Interval for another Marriott.

If it did cover it, I doubt it would cover anything now because of Dorian. Usually once a storm is named, any policy bought after that won't help cover losses because of that storm.

That is true.... once a storm is named the insurance does not cover it.

I had an exchange from II 2 years ago at Marriott's Ocean Pointe. Palm Beach. Hurricane canceled our plans..I didn't have insurance.(which I always buy). .But II allowed me to pick another destination within 6 mos....It worked out fine with them...I also had a problem with my booked airline cost. They also came through

FYI....Airfare insurance is very cheap IMO.....We went to Cancun last year and cost was about $35 per.....We stayed for 3 weeks..

I've lost 3 weeks to storms in the last 6 years. I'm going to spend the $99.00 and be done with it. The MF are to high to come away with nothing should a storm occur.

We had a week booked during Dorian via RCI and they refunded our points and gave us a credit for the exchange fee.

I am the OP of this thread and here to give an update. As previously stated, I did not purchase travel insurance for the AC through II. But I did use my Chase Sapphire Reserve card to purchase it. I filed a claim through the insurance company Chase uses (which is the same one II uses.) After 10 weeks of phone calls, submitting proof of EVERYTHING (even the airfare which I wasn't making a claim for), emails, faxes, and finally snail mail........ the claim was finally approved.
So.....if you have the Sapphire Reserve card and use it to purchase a getaway, AC, or extra vacation, you don't need to buy travel insurance through II. FYI

Thanks for this information! We do have the Sapphire Reserve card and have been happy with its travel insurance benefits - had to cancel a European tour once due to family medical issues, and it reimbursed everything. It's good to know it will cover purchased timeshare vacations as well.
