My husband just went back to classroom teaching full time. So back to his school vacation times :ponder: Wondering when the better time of year is to go? We are MVC owners, also wondering how to best spend our time - maybe 10 days to 2 weeks.

Summer is crowded; Christmas is worse.

Airfares, rental car prices, and restaurant crowds follow the same trend.

If you travel in December, you may wish to avoid staying in places where it rains a lot in the winter, such as Princeville (Kauai) or Kapalua (Maui), and instead stay at at drier places on the island, such as Poipu (Kauai) or Wailea (Maui).

We've had some crummy (rainy) weather in Nov/Dec, plus some nice weather to be fair, so that time of year can be variable. I would go in the summer which can be hot but at least has better odds of less rain. We have played a lot of cribbage on our lanai in the winter. After our last Dec trip which included buckets of rain, I said no more.

Our winter go-to location is Mexico, specifically Cabo or Puerto Vallarta. We've had cloudy days there, but not rain.

It depends a lot on what weather you’re leaving behind in December. If it’s freezing cold with snow on the ground, then Hawaii is great at that time of year. But if you want to lay on the beach for a tan, then Summer is a better time to go, because Hawaii is drier then. Winter break is a narrow travel window when you’re competing with *EVERYBODY* for space in Hawaii. Summer is two to three months, and while crowded, it won’t be AS crowded.

I like the idea of Mexico in Winter, Hawaii in Summer.

The first two weeks of December are pretty good in Hawaii regarding less tourists every where. September and May are not too bad either. Holidays are really peak tourist times in Hawaii. Even in the slow times it sees very crowded too me.

You’re certainly correct, but OP is looking at the school calendar. So early December, September, or May aren’t likely to work. It’s a tight timeline.

I think spring break might be better than Christmas or Summer because many young adult spring breakers go to local areas because of a lack of funds and the winter tourists are gone.

And spring breaks across the country are spread out among many weeks.

For many programs, (Hilton for example) week 51 and 52 are event weeks and area automatically booked for the owners, and then if they do not want them they are then cancelled whenever, and put back into the pool. Problem is you don't know when that cancellation takes place.

Summer is also a longer period of weeks. Christmas is 2 weeks only. So I agree with above, summer is Busy, Christmas is worse.

Christmas is an extremely difficult time to find hotels or timeshares and prices go up. It has always been that way in the past, but it will be a lot more difficult in the future with the removal of 8000 Air BnB units that just happened on August 1st. If you depart your home in early June or the first day school gets out, that might work best. Book your lodging first and than get airline tickets. If you can find a place to stay during Spring Break, that is definitely the best time to travel, but it is also very busy. Last of all, think about going to the other islands if you can’t find a place to stay on Oahu.
