I've never purchased Hhonors points before, and not really interested right now, but I received an e-mail about this special. I think the general consensus is that HHonors points are valued at about 1/2 cent (could be more or less depending on the value you are getting when redeeming).

So if one was to purchase 160K points they would get 160K free for a total of 320,000 points which would cost $1600. 320,000 X 1/2 cent is $1600 so it looks like the purchase price is about the true value. Even with the special, it doesn't look worth doing unless you think you could get a high end location in return for the points.

    Am I missing anything?.

I got the same email. Only thing I think you missed was deleting the email.

Never really makes sense to buy points unless your close to fulfilling a redemption of other points.

If I was short 10k points for a major use of points I wold consider buying the missing points to complete the reservation/ transaction.

Otherwise it’s probably a bad idea most of the time.

I bought points for a high end stay last year . Its not a good idea for the local hampton inn but if you want to stay at the waldorf it might work out. I pay cash any time its cheaper than 1/2 cent per point

I don’t think you are missing a thing. I got the same email and deleted it. It makes much more sense to rent a hotel room using you HHONORS American Express credit card and earn the points that way.

Yeah, this. It can make sense if you have a particular near-term redemption in mind where you can do better than the cost. However, to buy and hold, even if it seems a good deal, is often not due to potential devaluation over time. And, yes, it can make more sense to do that than paying for a room under the right circumstances, even a Hiltoin Amex card.

    Cheers.
