I just finished a 16 hour driving trek to HICV - Gatlinburg, and checked in at the VIP welcome center. They of course pushed the owners update and told me how our deeds were changing to the new system and we were receiving a bunch of great new benefits.

I think I should know better, but the 2:00 AM start and long drive has my brain fuzzy. I'm correct in thinking that they are going to try to convince us to change our deeds to the new system in order to get the new benefits, correct? From what others have heard, there are no new benefits without purchasing, are there?

They do have new benefits and you don't have to change what you already own but you do have to make a new purchase in order to qualify for the new benefits. I am not sure if they have changed 100% to trust (although likely they will try to convince you that is the case. If you go and you want the new benefits you can try to push for a small deed at Lake Geneva that you would at least be able to give away after you pay it off if you need to.
