Interesting article. And it illustrates the reasons why it's important to understand Hawaii and its people. A complicated situation, and one that will never be resolved to the satisfaction of Hawaiian historians. Respect for others goes a long way to understanding how things got to be the way they are. "Live With Aloha" is not just a bumper sticker.

If you are interested in learning more about how Hawaii became part of the US, Sarah Vowell's book "Unfamiliar Fishes" is a good overview.

Sarah's books are great on audiotape/book, as she reads them herself and has a unique vocal style. She also voiced the character (Violet) from Pixar's The Incredibles movie series.

I love her audio books and Unfamiliar Fishes was no exception. Her voice is very unique though. Definitely one where you need to play the sample first. My other favorite of hers was Assassination Vacation. She brings an interesting perspective to history.

Ditto. Assassination Vacation was a good book and my first also. Eventually - given her Cherokee heritage - she is going to get around to writing a book focused on the Trail of Tears. That will be a good one also.

This author sounds like what I think about James Michener. He wrote very colorful fact-based histories that were quite entertaining to read.

The same can be said for every place you visit and it should. Sometimes it’s people on vacation and just not thinking but it seems now most people just don’t care. I see this in Hawaii all the time.

True. However Michener's travelogues are getting to be a bit dated, as most of them were written 50+ years ago - one in which global tourism was not what it is today. I started listening to "Iberia" recently - his travelogue of the Iberian peninsula (Spain/Portugal). His cultural idioms were very interesting, but not something I have seen in the past few years we have travelled in Spain.

Not a surprise that things are becoming dated. But in the 70s and 80s when I was reading most of his stuff, it was a very intriguing insight to the historical parts of the areas he wrote about. I never looked at Alaska or the Caribbean the same way afterwards.

Or the West. I just re-read Centennial.
