Someone has offered me the use of their December week at the Marathon Key Beach Club in Marathon Key, Florida.

If I accept this will be my first time there and I am wondering if any fellow Tuggers have ever been to Marathon Key?

I would enjoy reading posts from others that know anything about the area or about this particular resort on the Keys.

Any decent restaurants in the area?

Additionally, how badly was the immediate area damaged during the 2017 Hurricane (Hurricane Irma) that raised havoc on Key West ?

Thanks for all your input!

It has been a long time but my recollection is that Marathon Key is one of the larger keys and has plenty of restaurants, stuff to do, etc...

I think you will need a car.
If you are a diver or a snorkeler you will not be far from Sombrero Reef or Looe Key Marine Sanctuary or John Pennekamp State Park. How great is it that the United States has its own coral reef?!

One of the most beautiful beaches in the Keys is located at the Bahia Honda State Park. It’s south of the 7 mile bridge. It has a beach on both the Atlantic side and bay side. I remember when I was on college break and I saw dozens of conch mollusks in the sea grass beds while snorkeling.

Key west is close enough to do as a day trip. There are some beautiful old restored homes in key west. It’s fun to walk the streets and explore.

There are restaurants and shops, and even an airport and hospital on Marathon. We rented a small boat in Marathon and stayed around the shoreline and patch reefs and had fun snorkeling, and then we swam right into a stingray and startled him. I would love to go back to the keys again...

I was just there news year week and found minimal huricane damage to most of Marathon keys. There are many good restaurants and fun things to do:snorkling several good beaches, fishing charters, beautifull sceanary almost always great weather. If you have never been there a day trip to Key West about 45 miles away and possibly an overnight there.

We own two weeks at MKBC, we love it It is not a 5 star but it is comfortable. I would take it. Very little damage to the resort. Beautiful view out the windows. Lots to do and great places to eat. Watch sunset from the point.
