Married at First Sight?

Throughout history and cultures, the concept of picking your own spouse is only a blip, occurring in western European civilizations.

Arranged marriages are much more the norm. And most of those occur in the context where the married couple step into roles into an extended family, where they don't head off somewhere and start a life together by themselves. And there is the embedded concept that loving someone is a decision and an obligation, not an emotion. Like Tevya and Golde singing "Do you love me?"

It only makes for television when that concept is plopped into a setting where the usual strictures and supports associated with "marriage at first sight" have been removed. If you moved the show into a cultural setting where Marriage at first sight is the norm, there wouldn't be anything to see.
