Pearl Harbor offers virtual reality tours

  • World War II history enthusiasts young and old can travel back in time via three virtual reality tours at the new Pearl Harbor Virtual Reality Center, open daily at Pearl Harbor Visitors Center.

Pacific Historic Parks and the National Park Service have partnered to offer these immersive experiences to the public.

With this technology, visitors can step back in time to retrace the events of Dec. 7, 1941, and let history come alive with never-seen-before 360-degree perspectives, said Carlton Kramer, vice president of marketing for Pacific Historic Parks.

    PEARL HARBOR VIRTUAL REALITY CENTER

    >> Where: Pearl Harbor Visitors Center courtyard
    >> When: 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. daily
    >> Cost: $4.95, includes three virtual reality tours; $3.96 for kamaaina and military with valid ID
    >> Info: 954-8759, pacifichistoricparks.org

The three tours, which are about 20 to 30 minutes total using a virtual reality viewer, include the opportunity to:

    >> Explore the main deck of the USS Arizona a day before it was sunk by an armor-piercing bomb during the Japanese attack.

Visit the crow’s nest at the top of the USS Arizona, with a 360-degree view enabling you to take in the entire battleship. Meet some of the sailors who were part of its final crew.

    >> Witness the key stages of the Japanese attack on Dec. 7, 1941, on Pearl Harbor’s Battleship Row. Offered in four segments, this virtual reality experience brings to life the attack sequence. See Battleship Row in detail.

    >> Experience the USS Arizona Memorial. Take your own private tour at your own pace. Visit each solemn room at the memorial, including areas off limits to the public, and even venture to the rooftop of the memorial to view historic Pearl Harbor Bay.

The detailed tour allows viewers to read the 1,177 names listed on the shrine wall, as well as those sailors who later decided to be interred with their fellow shipmates.

Thanks for sharing this. We haven’t been to Pearl Harbor in a couple years, so are planning to go this fall while we are at Ko Olina. This new feature will offer just that much more to the experience.

Best regards.

Just remember the Arizona Memorial is still closed until "at least Oct 1, and probably later" due to structural issues with the dock and visitor ramps. A repair plan is supposed to be submitted from the contractor by August 31 or so, with repairs to follow. The National Park Service boat cruises are, for now, a 15 minute free tour of Battleship Row.

Even if the memorial is closed, there is still plenty to see. There are 3-4 buildings set up as a museum and the history of Pearl Harbor. Seeing the USS Arizona underwater is a very small part of the park.

Agree 100%. The USS Missouri and the Pacific Aviation Museum are excellent, not to mention the regular visitor center stuff, even without the Arizona.

Thanks Jim. I forgot about that, but agree with you and others who posted that there is still a lot to see there. We won’t be there until Oct. 20-28, so we will see how things progress.

Best regards.
