New ferries, departure site for Puerto Rico islands

By Associated Press / Travel Weekly / October 1, 2018

“SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico (AP) -- Puerto Rico's government has bought four new ferries and announced a new departure site for those traveling to two nearby islands popular with tourists.

Officials say the move is expected to reduce travel time to Vieques and Culebra and improve service.

Ferries will be leaving from the eastern town of Ceiba instead of Fajardo starting Oct. 10.

The ferry service to the two islands has long been plagued by lengthy delays and aging equipment.”

That is great. We wanted to go to Culebra, but the ferries were so unreliable that everyone said not to use them. One of the families we met on vacation this past summer flew to Culebra. It is around $80 each way from San Juan to Culebra, but it is in a tiny 8 person plane.

I will take advantage of this when we go there next (maybe this summer).

We flew to Vieques a few years ago. There were three families, so we actually ended up with two planes. My daughter actually got to fly the plane (the pilot turned over the controls to her in the co-pilot seat after we reached cruising altitude.) It was a highlight of the trip and we got to skip all the security lines at the San Juan airport (because we "cleared" them in Vieques....sure.)
