New Payment policy at eBay

Did everyone notice the change in payment policy at eBay. Now you can't use any online payment option other than Paypal, and can't list cash as a payment option. I hope this ends up meaning they bite the hand that feeds them. Combine this with the policy to only allow paypal if you accept all options within paypal (ie, have to have a merchant type account, with all the extra fees, rather than a basic account and not accept credit cards).

Not permitted on eBay.com: Sellers may not solicit buyers to mail cash. Sellers may not ask buyers to send cash through instant cash transfer services (non-bank, point-to-point cash transfers) such as Western Union or Moneygram. Sellers may not ask buyers to pay with Stormpay. Finally, sellers may not request payment through online payment methods not specifically permitted in this policy.

I know of a few people who will no longer list at eBay because of this. How does everyone else feel?

No Problem

I would be leery of any eBay auction asking me to send cash & in that case I just wouldn't bid.

I like using PayPal because of the safety & convenience.

When I'm selling via eBay, I accept checks -- regular or cashier's. Nobody yet has sent me a bad check. When the regular checks clear, I send the items.

Sometimes a seller doesn't take PayPal, so in a case like that I send a cashier's check or (when the amount is low -- say $40 or less) I'll send cash.

Haven't had any payment problems as buyer or seller so far.

Yay eBay!

Great!

I would hope that eBay discourages sending cash thru the mail.

Some items cost a few bucks on eBay and sending $3.00 in the mail is inviting the letter to never get to the seller.

I’m sure cashier’s checks and personal checks are still allowed.

What I don't like is when I pay with Paypal I pay through my checking account. It used to go through right away, now it takes 3 days before my item gets shipped. I don't understand why when everything is electronic.

If you don't have your bank account, backed with a credit card on file with Paypal. It comes thru to the seller as a bank transfer, not an instant transfer, and Paypal tells the seller to wait for the transfer to clear. If you Paypal account has a credit card on file as a backup, all of them will show up as an instant transfer. No delay.

In my listings I used to have a statement "I accept PayPal but only with existing funds or bank transfer -NO CREDIT OR DEBIT CARDS" because I did not have a merchant account so I wouldn't have to pay any fees. Apparently PayPal changed their policy w/eBay in August stating if you accept PayPal you must accept all forms of payment. eBay cancelled one of my listings because of my statement.

So now, basically, PayPal/eBay is forcing you to have a merchant account (ie: pay fees). What a rip-off!

I don't even mention in my Ebay listings that I accept Paypal now, only a check or money order. However, almost all buyers will contact me beforehand or after the auction ends to ask whether or not I will accept Paypal. I can tell them at that point that I only accept "cash" from Paypal.

That's my point - if you want the option of instant payment (and your buyers want it so you can ship your item as soon as they send payment), they have limited your options - you have to use paypal, and if you list paypal as a payment option, you must accept all forms of paypal, which means you must pay fees to paypal because you then have to have amerchant account.

I'm not suggesting they eBay encourage people to send cash, but cashiers checks and money oreders cost extra (and have been known to be forged), and checks don't clear immediately (consider canadians accepting US checks, which take even longer). So now you have to consider the eBay fees, plus the Paypal fees (based on full amount including shipping), before you set your price. Fine for expensive items, but what about that small item. Assuming you started your auction at 99 cents, and sell for less than $25:

insertion fee $.25
Final value 5.25% of final value
paypal flat fee $.30
paypal 2.9% of all costs (including shipping)

It means eBay/Paypal get almost everything off low priced items. Looks like a bit of a conflict of interest to me, but hey, we can alway go to some other auction site to be ripped off.
