My husband and I arrived in Oahu yesterday and are staying at Hilton Hawaiian Village Kalia Tower. I haven’t been here for 24 years and we need recommendations on good tours to book. What have you done that you have thought worthwhile or really enjoyed? My husband has never been here before so we appreciate all suggestions. Please give us the name of the tour operator and tour name if you can. Mahalo, Amy & Glenn.

I always recommend The Home if the Brave tour. It’s a small bus and they also take care of your Pearl Harbor tour. One of the best tours I’ve taken. We also enjoyed the Polynesian Culture center.

I agree with Jeff. The Home of the Brave tour is one of the best. We used them 2 years ago and were very pleased. There are a few different tours to chose from but we took the tour to Pearl Harbor and downtown Honolulu. They point out all the places of interest and are very informative. Another suggestion is, if you are able, go to Diamond Head and make the climb. It is not too difficult if you just take your time. My husband and I are in our 70's and we made it to the top. It is truly incredible. Enjoy you trip.

We were there last week and took the tour offered through the Honolulu Art Museum for the Doris Duke home called Shangri La. The cost is nominal--$25pp. You go to the museum and they will take you a nice bus to the home, located east of Diamond Head in an exclusive neighborhood for the tour. If you're into Islamic art, you'll be fascinated. Even if you aren't, the knowledge and enthusiasm of the tourguides and docents is infectious.

I heard it was being renovated and that parts of it were closed. Did you get to see much?

This might not be your speed but we REALLY enjoyed it and decided it was the best part of our entire Hawaii trip. We downloaded the Shaka Guide Oahu South Shore driving tour and rented a car and did the drive. For us as a small family that wanted to go at our own pace, it was just fantastic. And we made sure to rent a FUN car for it - we got a Tesla Model S. It was a really fantastic experience!

The dining room is being renovated, but the tour was extended to other parts of the house. As it is, the tour only covers about 1/3 of the home, but it's spectacular.
