I booked something for thanksgiving and couldnt go so i changed the reservation to hawaii for christmas. I've only been a hilton owner for a year so i don't know all the ins and outs of booking. If I find that I can't go for christmas, can I just change my reservation again and buy the point protection and then cancel and bank all my points into next year? Is this a work around that we can use to our advantage?

You can not change or move your reservation into the next calendar year. Can you still purchase point protection? This is the only time that it is worth it for a changeable reservation.

I read the tread you posted and I’m still a little confused. Here’s my exact situation

I have 8820 points for 5 days in grand waikikian from dec 26-31.

I can change to 5 or 6 days for dec 11-16 for example. Using the same amount of points or more. Today is Nov 27. If I make the change and pay for point protection, can I get all my points back and then rescue them into 2018 for a later use?

If in fact they do let you add point protection at this point, then yes. But I'd call to ask.
You'd better be darn sure they'll let you 'cuz otherwise, you may just increase your cancellation penalty.

Can you change your reservation to another location with a check in date of >30 days out? I think if your reservation starts in calendar 2017, even it it runs into 2018 it will use all 2017 points. You might have to test that first. Then, since it is >30 days out, you could cancel that new reservation and not lose points. This assumes you are looking to cancel right now -- if you aren't, then I think your best bet is to follow Talent's advice.

I don't think that the system will allow you to change a reservation spanning across calendar years. You can get it a try. Also, you can call reservations to discuss. They might be able to do it (they can override, if necessary). Hopefully you will get someone helpful and discuss what all of your options are.
