I am staying at the Mayan and if someone could advise me on the best public transport to Merida from Playa? Anyone stay at the Hotel Gamma de Fiesta in Merida? I could get an exchange to the Gamma for a week or would it be better to just book a hotel? How long do you need in Merida?

Check out the ADO bus . It would leave from centro Cancun to Merida
ADO also goes from Playa del Carmen to the Cancun terminal .

In 2015 we payed about $6 one way from centro Cancun to Playa del Carmen . There is a bus terminal about a block from the beach .
The bus made at least one other stop in Playa and also Puerto Morales.

While waiting to leave centro Cancun terminal I noticed that Merida & Belize City were part of the ADO route network .

We took that trip there and back last December (spent 14 enjoyable but hot days in Merida). Took about 4 hours, as I recall. Scenery on the way not impressive, but the buses are quite up to date and comfortable, but can be a bit cool. Buy your tickets at the terminal. The online ticketing facilities do not work unless you have an account with a Mexican bank. There is a direct route from Playa del Carmen to Merida. You do not have to go through Cancun. Be sure to know where to get off in Merida. There is more than one stop. We are doing this again this year.
