I've learned a valuable and at times painful lesson about the current Marriott Rewards Points system over the last few days. Even though I have been Platinum Elite the past several years, I wanted to get to LT Gold before the new system kicks in tomorrow just to lock in LTP in the new system. My plan was to then work towards LTPP.
Through a series of calls various family members transferred points to my account to secure reservations for a family trip to Canada next month. Of the 365K points transferred into my account, only 185K counted towards my LT status. Shocked the heck out of me and I had a lengthy conversation with a CSR about this today. Here is what I learned:
If a person transfers points into your account, it doesn't matter if they earned the points or if they bought them, the 1st 50K is considered "points sharing" and is not going to count towards your LT status. A person can transfer more than the 50K into your account to complete a reservation with special approval. It can't just contribute to the reservation, it has to complete it. Those points will count towards your LT status.
I just wanted everyone to have this info in case they are trying to get to LT status before the end of the year. We still have until the end of the year to make it to LT status under the new system.
Without those other 180K points counting towards my own status it will be tough for me to make it but I'm going to give it a heck of a try. Otherwise, I'll be riding out the next 5 years hitting Platinum every year with 75+ nights just to lock in LTP. It's not really tough for us to do because we travel quite a bit but it sure would have been nice to be LTPP instead of just LTP.
Oh well, best laid plans of mice and men. You learn something new every day.
