Some 25 years ago I had High Dose Rate Radiation when it was in its infancy. My Radiation Oncologist said the key was getting as much power as possible to the cancer without injuring surrounding tissue. I was put in a lead lined room while it was done. In my case my prostate cancer came back 5 years later and I had to have Cryo to get rid of it. My guess is that with today's technology they are able to target more radiation power more precisely than back when I had it done to me. Based on my experience and advances likely made in the last 25 years I would definitely consider it today if I had prostate cancer...

I'm glad to see the new technology and treatment options. A cure would be great. My husband was treated for the same thing around the same time with (I suppose) regular targeted radiation combined with ADT and is still clear, but his radiation oncologist said that we could toss around the word "cured" after 10 years of clear scans and blood work. Let's hope that this is a cure for all patients.

Prostate cancer is a fairly easily treated cancer if caught early, and a tough SOB if you miss that window or have the aggressive form. If I had a penny for everyone who told us that at least it was "only" prostate cancer since it's curable, or that it's not like he has ________(fill in the blank form of cancer). Or wonders why we get nervous before every blood draw. There are definitely tougher types of cancer - and my daughter works in the field of pancreatic cancer so we know how "lucky" we are - but cancer in any form is a life changing experience.

That said if you have read this far in my little pity party, lolol, you should check out what my decorator does for kids going through cancer treatment. My decorator isn't a cook, and when a group of neighbors was setting up a meal train for the family of a girl who had just started cancer treatment, she said that "I can't cook but I can help make her room a comforting space while she went through treatments" and the rest is history. She does a room makeover for the patient, and even freshens up the rooms of any siblings in the house since everyone in the home is affected by the treatment. Her husband had recently gone through his own cancer treatment. I really admire her tenacity. She has even inspired other chapters throughout the country. Look up Savvy Giving By Design. You can see some of the room reveals on youtube searching SavvyGivingbyDesign .(Not sure if a link is allowed and I'm only posting this as an interesting story).

When I was young back in radar tech school we used to joke about getting hit with the beam and causing our man bits to shrivel up like raisins, who’d a thought 50 years later they can use a focused beam to kill a tumor.

My husband has the very aggressive kind. It recurred after 6 years and I had been researching new treatments. I discovered that Mayo and a place in Phoenix had scans that could detect where the cancer was in its earliest stages. We had to pay for the scan but it showed where the recurrence was. We then went to a doctor that was using this form of radiation for recurrence. We have done this twice with great results. It is very easy, took 5 days and he had no side effects. There are now new scans available and more locations. He would have done this initially if we had known about it.

I had implanted radiation as part of a clinical trial 8 years ago to treat my cancer. I went to MD Anderson in Houston Tx. I'm clear so far and the treatment was relatively easy with no side effects. The key in my mind is to get your PSA checked regularly and to get treated at a Major cancer center. My Radiation Oncologist has moved on from implanted radiation to manage the proton knife center at the hospital so I expect the treatment continues to improve. There are lots of treatment options when the disease is caught early and not much they can do if it progresses.
