Pueblo Bonito ends use of plastic straws

By Meagan Drillinger / Travel Weekly / August 7, 2018

“Los Cabos' Pueblo Bonito Resorts has banned the use of plastic straws at its five resort hotels, effective last month. The "Save the Seas -- Skip the Straw" campaign is focused on curbing the destruction of marine life caused by plastics.

It's the latest ecofriendly effort by Pueblo Bonito. As part of the company's recycling efforts, bottles are cleaned, crushed and melted in special ovens and taken to the San Miguel Blown Glass Factory for use in crafts.”

I've started hoarding Starbucks straws until I see what they come up with as a replacement for plastic. As long as the new straws last the 45 minutes it might take me to completely finish a frappicino, I'll be fine with them.

Also, we have to do something about all the other tons and tons of plastic we throw into the ocean. And how about all the other countries that throw straws? Think we can get them to come on board with us? But seriously, it is a BIG problem
for every country! (But I do hoard my straws, too) And maybe it can start with STRAWS!

We did our part; bought 30 oz Yeti mugs with reusable straws. Big enough for 2 for 1 drinks during Happy Hour, too, and no waste straws!

I heard the NPR interview - IMO - to sum it up - it is all “spin “:designed by a well meaning group to help us all put a focus on our mindless use of disposable (plastic) items .

Straws are not the problem .

For people with disabilities like MS - not having a straw to drink through is a problem .

said another way its also a way for businesses to save money on something that is not really needed. There are legitimate needs for plastic stuff. probably not as much as we consume.

Yep! That is what we take with us now too. We used to use the Bubba Kegs, but the Yeti's are less of a distraction as many people take the SS mugs everywhere. We started taking our own years ago when we saw a bunch of folks using the Bubba Kegs at an all-inclusive place that had self-serve beer or margaritias. We thought that was a great idea and have been taking them for a long time. :) Saves trips back to the unit for refills! :)

Just got an email from Yeti advertising their 1 gallon jugs to refill the mugs with. Talk about efficiency and avoiding trips back for refills! ;) I wonder how many 2 for 1 margaritas are in a gallon....:ponder:

I go to a lot of restaurants for lunch in Detroit which have the paper straws. They work well enough. They're just like the old candy striped paper straws you used to get at the old diners and ice cream shops. All of the trendy spots here have paper straws and I'm often taking clients out to eat or drink. You get used to them. A better idea would be for all of us to cut back using straws unnecessarily such as with a mixed drink at a restaurant.

Actually, almost all of the restaurants I have been to that no longer use plastic straws now offer paper straws which cost more, so the businesses may not be saving money.

I don't understand the resistance to eliminating some of the plastic waste we produce. Straws will still be available for those with disabilities. You can choose to use a reusable straw. Paper straws work fine. While this movement may have been based on some flawed research, reducing the amount of plastic we use will result in less plastic in the ocean, landfills, etc. How is that a bad thing?

never said it was bad. Just want people to stop swooning over businesses who are saving turtles etc.. They do it for 1 reason. Keep or improve Business (retain/attract customers and reduced cost). Even that is not a bad thing just call it what it is.

Straw research was conducted by a 9 year old now quoted as fact by mainstream media. I am simply trying to get a alternative and more accurate view conveyed. I'm happy less will be used and it will compel research for new alternatives.

all are good.

The question is whether the basic research from the 9 year old is incorrect despite the math, and whether that is the only study available.

The next thing that needs to be controlled...cigarette butts! Fiberglass filters can't be good for sea turtles and other sea critters to stuff in their guts!
