I have a confirmed reservation for HGVC Bay Club that cost me 44 TPU. I put in an "Upgrade & Change" request for DVC Aulani, HGVC grand islander and grand waikikian and Wyndham Beachwalk.

I understand that the upgrade will only take place between 14 days and check in day.

How often do these "UPGRADES & CHANGES" actually happen, if at all? Anyone have direct experience in getting their requested upgrade?

If you typically see that type of inventory available within 14 days of check in and no one takes it for 4+ hours of open availability as an exchange first then your chances are good. This works for off off season older resorts and even in shoulder season in locations like Orlando. I think there is zero chance for any of your requests. There is an auto check but it is only once a day and it is not check as inventory is make available online. It is auto checked for upgrades after sitting in open availability for several hours.

We have put in for it twice with no luck either time. Both times were for an October (so non-peak) trip to Florida. The last time we tried because our DD had decided to join us and offered to pay the upgrade fee if we got it, but she was prepared to sleep on the couch if we didn't. Since she was flying down to meet us (we drove) she didn't want to wait until the last minute to get airfare. When we got to the check-in desk I mentioned that I had unsuccessfully put in a request for an upgrade to a bigger unit (from a 1 bedrm "A" side to a 2 bedroom A+B). The woman told us the place was half empty and said she'd give us the B side to our unit -no charge! Better than the RCI upgrade! DD was happy, she not only had her own bedroom but bathroom and kitchenette as well!

I figured it was a long shot but was trying to be optimistic on the automatic upgrade system RCI has.

With II I have made some killer upgrades, some far in advance and some the day of but that was with manually searching and using E-plus. We are talking 1br Marriott Ko olina to a 3br penthouse or 1br Kauai beach club to a 2br Kauai lagoons, and 1br Marriott Maui ocean club to a 2br in the Napili villas. Got to love interval for those exchanges.

We received an RCI upgrade in Aruba in December 2017. We had a 1BR reserved at Casa Del Mar, and we're upgraded to a 2BR at Costa Linda about 1 week before check-in.

No idea how common these are, but they do happen. Likely only happen when someone cancels in the last 2 wks.

OP: You are brave! I'd be worried for my "luck" of getting one of those exchanges (spread across different islands) as it would also bring along an interesting last-minute change to my travel arrangements. (I'm a worry wart ... I'll give you that.)

Good on you and best wishes on the upgrade of your choice!

Last August our studio at Playa Linda Beach Resort in Aruba was changed to a studio at Divi Aruba Phoenix Beach Resort. Worked out well because we already had a 1bdrm at Divi Aruba Phoenix and preferred being at the same resort.

Just make sure your upgrade/change requests are very specific because they happen automatically... it's not like an on-going search where you get notified and can accept/reject. You may not be able to get back the original reservation once it's changed.

We received a free upgrade to a 2BR unit last year at Las Mimosas in Spain (shoulder season). Loved it...going back next year.

Great to hear that the upgrades work, sometimes... most likely for my choices there would be little to no chance. But no harm in putting in the request. Worst case is stay at the Bay Club, which is hardly a problem or have to buy a few interisland tickets since all flight segments are already purchased.
