I am interested in buying 1 bdr Tamarack at Smuggler's Notch. One fixed week prime ski season, one floating week. I have asked the seller but I did not get clear answers yet so I am appealing to the wisdom and knowledge of the hive.

1) how is the reservation done for the floating off season week? Do i call/ go online and choose some of the available weeks or they are assigned by the resort in a rotating manner and i cannot change it?

2) upon the transfer of the TS ownership does the resort oblige you buy an activity pass? If the current owner has one, does it transfer with the deed?

3) how is Tamarack for ski weeks? I understand that it is one of the furthest from the ski lift.

4) i understand that Tamarack is one of the newest. Any other comments about these units? Any free access to any pool/activity?

5) how is the trading power for the 1 bedroom off season?

Thanks a lot!

I can answer some of these. The float is on a schedule. You can't change it. The current owner should have the schedule for at least the next 4 or 5 years already.

I don't think they sell activity passes since wyndham took over. If the previous owner had one it would not transfer. If they are still selling the passes the fee is per person and is quite high and lasts either 10 or 20 years but does not apply to anyone other then the owner- not guests, not exchangers and not renters.

The float is on a schedule (20 years out) but you can trade it through RCI or any exchange company for that matter. Or you can just show up to use it. I am assuming this is a weeks ownership and not a RCI points ownership. We actually use most of our float weeks now and really enjoy them- especially the ones in the Fall. But we did exchange them for years- though quite a long time ago- and went all over the country with them.

Also- you can purchase a benefits package through the resort for a certain number of years. It would cover all the people who stay with you in the unit up to the number of benefits you have purchased and up to what the unit sleeps.

For example- we have a unit in West Hill that sleeps 8 but bought benefits for 6 for 20 years out. I also believe you can purchase a Smuggs pass yearly (per week) if you do not want to pay for a benefits package. Tracy is right about the seller's benefits, however. Those cannot be passed on to you.

Nor can you rent the unit out to someone and give them use of the benefits. In our contract, our own guests can use them, however. It is all a matter of what is in the benefit contract as to how they can be used. That is something you should call owners services about at Smuggs, as there are a lot of different contracts floating around out there and I have no clue how the contract is currently worded for new owners.

Tamaracks are the newest buildings- though they are not THAT new. BUT- they are very nice and North Hill does have an indoor/outdoor pool and gym and hot tubs you can use- whether or not you have purchased benefits or a pass. If you own there- you can use that facility.

AND- you do not HAVE to purchase a pass to own at Smuggs. In fact, ours expires very soon and we are not purchasing another package. We are happy just using the condo and our recreation center at West Hill. We do our own activities or the fee based activities that Smuggs also offers.

Trading power for off season weeks is of course, not as great as it would be for a prime season week. However, for example, I just traded a late October (white- off season) week for a early Sept. week in Cape Cod (prime season- red/pink). But- I doubt I could get a prime summer week with it, though maybe I could have gotten a ski week sometime in winter (but NOT like President's week)IF I SKIED. LOL!

Yes- North Hill is way up there away from everything, but there are shuttles that can take you wherever you need to go in the village or to the ski lodge.

Good luck with your purchase! We have owned there for almost 20 years so if you have any other questions, just ask.

PS The one bedrooms in Tamaracks are quite roomy and comfortable.

I understand that there was a way to exchange internally with other owners for other weeks of the year. Is that option still available?

There is a swap column on the owner's portal where trades are listed. You can also look for a week that does not come with a float attached. For instance, I own a week at Villmarksauna (in the village) and I can choose an off season week to use in addition to my fixed week, but I only pay for it if I choose to use it.

Yes- it can be done on the owners' intranet/swap page on the Smuggs website - but not for Float weeks- only for your prime week.

However, once you become an owner you can join the Smuggler's Notch Owners' Facebook page and the Smuggler's Notch Resort Exchangers, Renters, Owners Facebook Page (same admins as the other one) and the Smugglers Notch Owners Yahoo Group and try to trade it with someone else there- or even rent it out. There is also a Timeshare Resort Users Group Facebook page where you could try to rent or swap. Or even right here on TUG!

Mary Ann already answered your questions in great detail, so I won't repeat what she has said...

My family has owned at Smuggs for over thirty (30) years and we love it. We converted our fixed, deeded weeks to Wyndham points in 2015, which allowed us to stay in a Tamaracks this past March for skiing. While the North Hill is not ski-in/ski-out (you have to take the shuttle), here is something we learned when we were there...your shuttle driver can drive you straight up to the upper mountains for drop off and thus you don't have to take the Morse lift and then ski (push!) over.

At the end of the day, instead of walking down to the road (in ski boots...ugh!) to the shuttle (pick-up) stop like everyone else, we would just ski to where the shuttle dropped us off at parking lot #1 and jump on there...much easier...

As Mary Ann said...if you need any more info about Smuggs, just post it here...

Cheers!

How do the floating weeks trade on RCI? We may not be able to use them more than occasionally in 2-3 years from now.

Well- years ago when we belonged to RCI- we traded them to go all over the country. including Hawaii, Arizona, Maine, New Hampshire, Florida, etc. We are weeks owners, not points.

I recently traded a white week float (Oct 22) for a red (pink) week- the Friday after Labor Day- for Cape Cod. This I did through Trading Places free membership- but I did have to pay a $50 upgrade fee for the better season - even though I traded a two bedroom gold crown for a one bedroom silver crown resort.

having been looking recently for Smuggs for summer usage, I noticed the off weeks for RCI #0300 don't get very many RCI TPUs. Many 2 BR are under 25 TPUs to book, which I have a feeling means that they get somewhat less than that for deposits. RCI points would get a bit better points value. You mght want to ask if your unit (or a generic deposit) goes into RCI as #0300 or as #7576, which might get a better trading power.
