Since I grew up in Honolulu, I occasionally miss the plants and flowers, so have been bringing back mainly flowering plants starts over the years. I have a couple of orchid plants that are years old. On my last trip, on impulse, I bought a couple of hapu'u tree fern woody stumps (agriculture inspected of course). Even tho' I wasn't returning home for nearly a week, the seller assured me they would last in the plastic packaging and to bring them back in my carry-on.

I followed packaging instructions on care and (lots of )watering and misting. I was afraid I had overwatered but 2+ weeks later, I'm getting a frond each on them! :whooopie: The one in the background has a frond "baby bump" :)

It does help that it's summer and hot here, to emulate growing temps in Hawaii.

My childhood friends and I thought Hapu'u tree ferns were very elegant and graceful looking. I anecdoctally heard they were sometimes difficult to get them full and lush, such as when a new frond emerged the existing one would later die. Well, I'll take it one frond at a time...

In our previous house we had several Hawaiian Ti plants right behind our pool. In the winter I would cut them down and pile about six inches of mulch on them. The next spring they would come out and would be about 3 1/2 feet tall before the frost would come the next winter!
